I picked up a Canon G9 for my Holiday to Bali in a couple of weeks, I didn't want to take my 1dsmk2 for weight/safety/inconvenience issues so after a bit of reading up on Point and shoot camera's (something I have no idea about) I found the G9 looked right up my alley.

First impressions, It's hardly small. This was a bit of a dissapointment but It's tiny when compared to my DSLR setup. In the hand it's totally different to what I am used to, looking through an LCD screen to take a photo is wierd at first but after a while I became used to composing/focusing using the screen. And the screen is great, 3 inches with plenty of resolution.

The camera itself is built really well, the body is solid and all the doors are well sealed and built tough. The best bit is the Dials up the top of the camera for ISO and the mode scenes, very easy to use and quick to navigate.

Focusing speed is very impressive, using the assist beam it's just as fast as a HSM lens. The camera actually uses a hotshoe so you can use a more powerful flash like the 580exII or off camera flash. Very cool.

The images the camera produces are very detailed and totally blew my expectations. The image stabilization really work well and is not a gimic, 1024 video aswell is extremely detailed and has good sound.

    100% crop, straight off camera

Overall, for the price, features, Full RAW support and build quality it is a mighty fine camera, I look foward to using it.

It's a badass little camera. I bought my mom one for Christmas and now I want one myself. It's absolutely great for those times where you don't want to lug around all your gear, yet you might actually want to take a pic.

I really like mine. As long as you keep the ISO low it produces some pretty decent images.

My father-in-law has a G2 that he bought when it first came out. We (as in me, my wife, and her sister) are going to buy him a G9 for his birthday this year. :coold:

    .

I've been thinking about getting one for a trip to Europe and it would rock to take into the pubs rather than dragging my 40d in those places.

    I'll up some tomorrow.

    Also..

The flash on it is reasonably powerful, and works well.

It has a flash range of 4m effectiveness (is that a word :hsugh:)

For value, I bought it second hand for $380Au with 2 batteries and a 8gb SD card, very good value imo.

I wouldn't mind a G9, but I'm putting my money elsewhere for the time being.

I hope to get a media pass for X-Games 14 :x: I hope Donn at Transworld works everything out!

I bought a G9 and Canon underwater housing for a snorkeling trip i went on and my key west trip net week, and i got hooked on underwater pics. Photography has always been a hobby of mine.

Seeing as how i am getting into scuba when i get back, i probably should have went with an ikelite or patima housing myself. Oh well, maybe when i start diving :bigthumb:

My camera did pretty good underwater in the canon housing, although i stayed above 30ft for the most part. Get a big memory card, a 4 GB card will hold like 230 RAW Files, i just ordered another 8GB Card and a spare battery for when i go snorkeling in the keys.

BTW, cheapest place i found the camera brand new was Circuit City. They had it for $ 429.99.
