Being more specific I should ask. . . are the lower grade rifles worth buying? can I expect it to come in decent condition (fireable) for $325-375?

the lower grade garands are likely to be in pretty poor condition. pitting of the metal, cracks and dings in the stock, little or no rifling left in the barrel.

also, the garand is known to have a finicky gas system when used with modern ammuntion.

I bought a Service Grade HRA M1 Garand from CMP last year and was delighted with my purchase. I think that CMP is the best value when it comes to purchasing M1's. Not only is CMP a great orginization, you're getting a piece of American history.

If I were you I'd go with at least a Service grade rifle. They're a couple hundred dollars more, but the wood is much better and the rifles are in better condition.

First check out the requirements and make sure you qualify:

Also check out the CMP forums

Which grade and manufacturer are you going with??

Also if you ever have chance order a CMP 03A3. I have one too and it's another great rifle.

    Bob,

I see you live in Ohio. Have you ever thought about walking into the CMP North store?? You can walk in and pick which rifle you want.

Are you sure that they allow that? It'd be about a three hour drive for me.
