It seems like there's two schools of thought on the military form. I'm curious what the strong guys here think is best for getting a bigger MP in the long run.

    1) Coaches like Mark Rippetoe seem to think that you need to get your body "under the bar" i.e. the bar is directly over your head and you push your torso forward.

    2) When it comes to the actual people I see with strong military presses it seems like they tend to press it directly up and keep their torso leaning back a bit with a lot of lower back arch.

So what's better for gaining strength? To me it seems like #2 is the form most people with really strong military seem to use so that's what I've been doing.

i always have and will military press like video #2, ( standing MP 315. seated 405, BTN 275). ripptoes is more like a military press/ behind the neck press. i just think its more productive to alternate between military and behind the neck. plus my shoulders just feel weird as fuck when i try riptoes technique.

I'm alot more like No.2, My biggest fear is the bar falling backwards over my head and still hanging on :noes:

Somewhere between 1 and 2. I don't really arch my back and I don't push out the bar so far behind my head at lock out. But then again I don't press some of the numbers that people up here.

The textbook form is to drive your head through at the top. A lot of people with strong overheads don't actually do this. I know I don't.

I've been told that I was missing out by not driving my head through at the top and could press more, but I don't know why. My last two strict presses were 275 and 280.

Have you posted here under a different name? Those are very impressive numbers. Do you compete at all?

I've just started driving my head through. Most of my SOHP work is done without doing that. If I do DB SOHP, I don't drive my head through at all. My best SOHP is 315.

I'm more of #1. I try not to lean back because it turns into an incline press.

I press more like the first vid, my back cannot handle leaning like Wendler does. Besides, it's not a shoulder press if you primarily rely on your chest to do the work.

wendler does a tiny hip/leg drive and ripp had the guy do some kind of hip thing also.

i'm trying to do mine with zero leg/hip movement. what's the correct amount of hip/leg drive?

the first :45 in the rippetoe vid has no hip/leg drive, it's as strict as you could get for a true military press

any military not designated as 'seated' is standing by default, i believe

sohp to me = strict overhead press to denote the lack of leg/hip drive off the bottom.
