Those of you who are in the military, how do you feel about the pirates? Also, chances are you will probably be deployed there in the next few years, how do you think the government will handle this?

They need to be dealt with.

I'm glad they finally were met with a bit of force as ignoring it only encourages them to continue their activities.

At the same time though, it needs to be an international ordeal.

How do I feel about the pirates? Well, they're certainly no Johnny Depp.

Well it's pretty obvious the rest of the world is going to dawdle around with their dicks in their hand saying, "Boy. If only a world superpower with the best military on the planet would go and take care of this problem we totally wouldn't be in this situation...." and then they wink suggestively at us and nudge us with their big stupid UN elbow while saying, "right? right? Right America? Right?"

They will then condem us when the pirates' families claim the US has been attacking "unarmed fishermen" with no provocation.

there are lots of little legalities with that, armed crews in foreign ports, insurance etc

i think the new hotness in maritime security is small armed escorts, but there are problems with that too

Africa will be the next new big test for America. It will happen while we're balls deep in Afghanistan. Obama will need to commit to some serious nation building or keep us the fuck out. If he commits, he will need to do it Bush-style and stop listening to the Gallop polls and newspaper headlines. If he commits he's going to have to get serious and think farther down the road than the next month or year or election.

Based solely on his actions during the prep for the Iraq surge, I don't think he has the balls. I sincerely hope he does, but he's going to have to prove that he has changed before I'm going to believe it.

Its important to understand the enemy's motivation. IMO timmy and his ilk dont deserve sympathy from anyone, but if what this guy is saying is true (im not saying it is, I dont know) these guys are just trying to feed themselves and their families. That being said, they have to be ready to accept the consequences, and it seems their leadership is already trying to twist their original motives as reports suggest they've made a fuckton of money and are getting greedy.

I read the whole thing.

David had it right in his comment on that site: Why would Europe cross thousands of miles of empty deep ocean just to dump their toxic waste near the shores of Somalia?

Liberals just can not stop rooting for whoever is currently getting the attention of the US military.

IIRC legitimate waste disposal methods are more expensive than sending a ship to dump it into uncontrolled waters, especially considering said ship may or may not be on its way to pick up goods in Asia.

    Anyway, flak vest on :o

No better "uncontrolled waters" than the middle of the ocean. :hsugh:

Have you people lost your minds?

I mean, it's totally a good idea! Its not a complicated region with a long history. There's no way in hell this could be a quagmire! We're only in two wars in the region, why not enter another one? It's not like we have our troops stretched thin between two wars already!

except those are covered by international maritime law, while each country's coastal waters are their own responsibility. The central government in Somalia is weak and can barely keep itself afloat.

Choose between dumping in the middle of the ocean where nobody will ever find the evidence or see you in the act... OR dumping off the coast of a country that has been getting international attention for over a decade and where the barrels will eventually wash onshore.

If it were me, I'd pick option 1.

They are common criminals, just using a different method of committing armed robbery, and we have no right to interfer.

I have no problem with the idea of arming our ships in international waters and blowing the fuck out of pirates if they mess with us.

Ironically, Africa I think, will be the test of Obama's mettle. I seriously doubt that he'll do anything about it, because he's got no balls.

The silly thing behind all this is, with Iraq/Afghanistan, we forget that as a country, we were screaming, "SEND SOME MARINES OVER TO KICK SOME SAND NIGGER ASS!" and then when we did, we immediately went, "WTF? WHY ARE YOU TRYING TO BE WORLD POLICE? THIS IS WRONG!"

We have to treat society as if they're dumb retarded fucktard children who has multiple personality disorders. What I see happening is that we're going to get urges by other countries and our own society to send troops into Somalia to clean shit up. We'll go in, fuck some shit up, break down the bricks of the house they've haphazardly built. Then we'll help them establish a REAL government again. Help them improve life over there. And then we're going to get criticized for trying to be the world police. Of course, they'll forget that they had been urging the US to do something about it. But they're gonna bitch when we do something about it. Fucking assholes.
As soon as we leave Somalia and pull out, the entire place is gonna fall to shit again. People's arguments will be, "WE SHOULD HAVE NEVER BEEN THERE IN THE FIRST PLACE! IT'S THEIR CULTURE, WE SHOULDN'T HAVE DONE ANYTHING TO DISRUPT IT!" or something similar. Bullshit will come out like, "THEY'RE JUST TRYING TO FEED THEIR FAMILIES! THEY HAVE NEVER KILLED ANYBODY! WE SHULD JUST NEGOCIATE WITH THEM AND USE DIPLOMACY!"

It'll be the beginnings of the culture war that'll start World War III.
