Solders, Yar-Heads, Airmen (women too), and Semen...

Invest in a 1.5" 3 ring binder and some Document protectors.

Save and store ALL of your Documents in this book. Keep it organized.

Save your Awards, orders, certificates, and maybe even your LES (maybe in a different folder for LES).

Invest in also a document divider (them things with the tabs on the side).

    Organize your books by

    Awards
    Certificates
    Orders

    (maybe not in that order)

But make sure you keep ALL of your documents that you get in that folder.

And whenever you need to take them copies out, make like 3-5 copies of the document. NEVER ever give out your copy to anybody. 'cause S-1 will lose it.

Thats all I got. So if anyone wants to add to this, add to it.

    Help these cherries out.

I recently went in to get a drivers license replaced. A few years back my house was vandalized, and I lost a ton of stuff...including my social security card (I dunno if they stole it or if I just tossed it into the dump along with everything else I tossed that was trashed). Anyway - I used my 214 as proof of my SSN. The lady said "oh my - this looks brand new!" My discharge was in 1983.

Yeah... I've tossed and lost a lot of important pictures and documents over the years, but my 214 is on a very short list of things that I'll safeguard.

Make sure you DO keep ALL of your certificates and orders for your awards. The lady at the ACAP center told me that 11B (Infantry) got like a 50k a year job 'cause he had his orders for an AAM (Army Achievement Medal) that pretty much said he got the award 'cause he did like 2 weeks of supply during a deployment. Shit like this is important especially if you don't plan on staying in for 20+ years. And even if you do decide to do your 20+ it is still important to keep these files. It might help you find a job in the future.

Also all people on current active duty.

Before you PCS/Shortly after you arrive at your new command/processing out et al. (I know the Navy does this for sure. But they back up your entire record each duty station you arrive to.) Log onto your Personel websites and request your record on either microfishe or cd keep it locked up and in a safe.

Definitely keep copies of all your military shit, esp after you get out.
While you're in, go to medical/dental every year or so, check out your records, and photocopy the entire fucking thing. If they lose them (which happens more often than they'll admit), you must resubmit to a full physical again. And usually, get all your immunizations again. Dental is easier since the prelimary screening is a much simpler process, (ie no blood drawn, etc).
If you plan on getting disability when you get out, take your medical records and make 3 fucking copies. The VA has a habit of losing them.

thats why you always make copies of EVERYTHING. Just hold on to your SRPC/SRF packets for one extra day and make copies.

BUPERS Online. After you get to your next command, go on BUPERS and request a CD of your record.
