    Yay or Nay?

Itll only be 1-1.5 hours a day after my full time job. He said just looking up prices and other stuff. What's the base pay for something like this? How much knowledge should one know? I dont wanna feel like a dumb ass when/if I get asked questions.

dude, if it's just for an hour and half. I'd do it for free if the owner gave me guns at cost.

Might be different at your local stores but I've found that gun store employees are not that knowlegable about guns. There is usually one gun that is OK, than half a dozen noobs. So I would not worry if you don't think you know very much.

Regardless I say you go for it. What's the worst that can happen?

I did it for a year and a half when I was in college. Worked extremely well for me, as I made decent money for a college kid (15/hr), made my own hours, and played with guns all day. Depending on the owner, there can definitely be perks to the job... I got stuff at/near cost, and used firearms on loan from the store to compete in all kinds of different competitions (Even did cowboy action several times.. ha).

That being said..... the job itself can suck. Idiots abound on both sides of the counter, and it gets old answering the same 9mm vs. 40 vs. 45/why a Sigma isn't the same as a Glock/why you can't spend $50 and get a good gun/etc questions day in day out. Some people have no idea what they want, and are looking for you to tell them what to buy (only to berate you about it later) and some just try and bait you into a debate about their pet gun make/caliber so that they can publicly declare you an idiot like all other people working at gun stores.

Luckily, I was/am good with a computer, and retail stores (my family owns a chain of C-stores) so I was able to largely work behind the scenes on store structure stuff. Then I got to go shoot comps and hook up guys there, thus largely avoiding most of the bullshit:)

Sounds like this is a part time thing, and if that's the case I don't see where you can go wrong. Only dumbasses looking for an ego boost will expect you to know everything. I got by pretty well just being honest, and telling people that I didn't know the answer, but would try to find it.

Maybe. I started out at 10.00, moved to 12, and then to 15. Regular sales clerks started out at $10. I worked my ass off there, and did a lot more than the average clerk (by the time I was leaving, I really wasn't out on the "floor" very much).

I created and implemented a UPC based inventory/sales control system, migrated his log books over to a software based solution, and handled much of the accounting work via quicken products. Not to mention I got him up and running with online sales (via various auction websites), and helped him get into the "tactical" market with 3gunners, practical precision, and action pistol guys (he had primarily dealt in "sporting" type arms, as well as collectibles), through match/shooter sponsorship and special discounts.

It was an interesting store. The owner was an older gentleman, who had accumulated a HUGE inventory of stuff, but with no way of tracking it, and no way to really advertise it (he had a substantial amount of niche "antique" type stuff). It was, quite frankly, a huge fucking mess when I first started there. He and his wife were wealthy, and had more money than time; thus he was willing to pay to pass off his workload for a few bucks. In retrospect I think the pay was more than fair (if anything, I was getting shorted), as like I said above, I worked my ass off.

it's still a pawn shop, one that happens to focus on guns. It's not a gun shop.

So what difference is there? What does a gunshop do/have that we don't in our store?

i think the question that shows the difference is "what does a pawn shop have that a gun store doesnt"

I don't see how that pertains to anything.

Running the pawn side >>>>>>>> Running the gun side
