Ok, so I am selling my Bushmaster 20" A2 upper. It was listed all over the net (OT, Craigslist, backpage, AR15.com)

Anyway I found a buyer who wanted it for $430 plus $20 shipping. He sent me a money order for $450. Got it today and it looks legit (lady at the bank said it looked just fine).

After looking at it a little bit more the bank addresses on the MO are all from Colorado and it says issued in Englewood Colorado, but the buyer is from GA :hsugh:. I asked at the post office and they said they were unable to find out where the package came from :o.

The bank will not cash it, they put $100 in my account and the rest is on hold for 5 days until they can verify it. I have not sent the upper yet because of this and will not until the other $350 is in my account.

Do you guys think this seems fishy or not???

I have never been paid with a mo before so i don't know if it is normal for them to be from a different state then the buyer :dunno:

Oh and also the mo was in a regular envelope addressed and everything but then that envelope was stuck in a big cardboard "certified mail" envelope from USPS.... I dont know if that is just to give me the illusion that it was coming from him but in all reality it was coming from colorado???

the convenience store down the street prints money orders that say they're
from some bank in Missouri or something(i'm in tx). Basically it could just be the location
of the money order service they're using which might not be related to the
    location your buyer is from.

But still, it's better to be safe IMO....I would wait.

Yeah I am going to wait on it. I dont want to send it and then have the bank call me and say that the mo did not go through.

just wait to ship it to be safe, but most likely it is and as long as the buyer doesn't get pissy about it you should be fine.

I sent him a pic of the receipt from the bank stating that there will have to be a wait and that if it clears it will be deposited in my account on the 29th. So if he is a honest buyer he should understand....:hs:

Isnt this how one of those scams works???

The seller sends the buyer a mo that they wrote a check for. They know the check will not clear, because there is no money in the account. Then the seller sends the item thinking they got the mo so they are in the clear. The bank then calls the seller a week later telling them the the mo didnt clear. Then the buyer gets away with the item and the seller gets fucked...

So the moral of the story is to always wait with mo's???

well the only risk really is the money order is a fraud, my understanding of money orders is that you have to pay the amount the money order is for so a third party holds onto the cash until you claim it. But I could be a complete idiot though.

Yeah always wait with checks or most MO's, USPS MO's being the exception.

always ask for postal money orders since, afaik, you can cash them at the post office.

you never ship until funds are clear. how long have you been using the internet for? common sense... no money, no product. i dont ship out on money orders same day, because they will ALWAYS have a hold(most of the time like a check) and you have to wait... especially on a high dollar item.

There are scams out there w/ MO's. I've seen it happen to a tenant of mine. Hold it until it clears.
