So I have my first ever BJJ tournament this coming weekend in Minneapolis...

Anyone else from the cage going to this?

    http://www.submissionhunt.com/

Also any tips for a newbie on what to expect, or things I should know about my first tournament?

I registered for the white belt gi division and the 6 months no-gi division.

I'm starting to get a little nervous because I just found out my best training partner checked himself into rehab this weekend for alcohol dependency. So I wont have many good training sessions this week before the tourny. :noes:

No, haven't actually been training for quite a few months now... I took over a full course load this year in school, no time homie. Last year the van that was going to take all of us broke down a couple days before, so only a few of the people carpooled down :hs: I didn't make the cut to go lol

Yeah, it's a Karate School, so I don't have the best training when it comes to BJJ, but my instructor has over 25 years of martial arts experience so he learns his stuff fast and is a great teacher. Our goal is to all get our blue belts in BJJ. Not sure how without a certified BJJ school though.

So far I've been able to cut 14 pounds in 2 weeks for my tournament. Weigh-ins are on Friday so I have plenty of time to drop 2 more pounds and get into the light heavyweight class of 180-189 lbs.

I honestly thought dropping from 205+ down to 199 was going to be hard. I never expected to be down 14 pounds already, especially since last week at work there was a huge potluck and then a huge Christmas lunch.

I'm so pumped I've almost dropped 2 weight classes, and I feel great.

For your first tourney at white belt? Never understood that. :dunno:

Seems to me you'd be better of making sure you're well nourished so you're getting in good training sessions than worrying too much about which weight class you're in for an amateur competition at the beginner level.

Yeah, I haven't done any drastic weight loss methods other than drinking lots of water, eating healthy foods, and working on my cardio.

I honestly think a lot of the weight has been muscle mass. I stopped lifting weights over 2 weeks ago when I knew I was signing up for the tournament.
Is that good or bad? Was it right to stop lifting and work on cardio full time? Or should I have stuck with some lifting?
