I need a solid answer here, the question has been posed, but never really answered.

Is the nutritional benefits of food undermined when it's microwaved?

Most of the nutrients are always undermined when you cook any food. I'm sure that the microwave makes it even worse.

Not really. Microwave really just boils the water. As long as the food you are cooking is not still alive and undergoing mitosis, you should be fine.

I guess I should've said "microwaved food" instead of "microwavable food."

not really.. every try to boil water in a microwave? you cant, well, without one of those fancy boiling things.
it heats the atoms up inside the food (the water mostly, youre right about that), and excites them so much they get superheated. so it essentially skips boiling.

i dont think its that bad for you, it cooks so fast that the food doesnt lose any nutrients, as compared to boiling lets say.

    :werd: pretty much

when the microwaves enter food, they move the water molecules, since the water molecules are polarized... they're flipping around in there and the friction of the molecules moving is what makes the food hot... i don't see how that would kill its nutritional properties :dunno:

If you get 100% pure water it won't boil. It'll only boil if it has impurities.

on a side note, you can't freeze 100% pure water either... if you put pure water in the freezer in a perfectly smooth container, it won't freeze... but if you drop something into it, it'll freeze so fast that it can break the container

Well it vibrates the water molecules causing them to heat up, but that is just getting technical. In essence it just heats water. However, you are also correct about the boiling, that is why you should NEVER put just water in a microwave. You should always put a wooden spoon or a stirrod or something in there. If you don't it has the chance of superheating (heating beyond the boiling point without actually boiling) and if you move it it will suddenly cause it to boil which means it has a good chance of spraying scalding water all over your face.

It will heat, it just won't boil, it will superheat like I stated above. Superheating is much more common in DI water as opposed to tap water.

in short, there has to be something to start an ice crystal... once a crystal starts, other crystals can grow from it... it's really cool to see in slow motion
just pure H2O... definitely not tap water or even water run through a brita filter

Im talking about microwaving food, not "microwaveable food". I assumed he meant like is it unhealthy to poach an egg in the microwave or thaw some chicken out in the microwave, not eat a hungryman xxl or whatever they are called.
