How does this compare to other IDEs such as Eclipse? I have the opportunity to purchase this at a reduced price, so I'm wondering whether it's worth it. Thanks for the advice :bigthumb:

Depends completely what you're using it for.

I use Eclipse for PHP, Java and general web dev.

Visual Studio 2005 is pretty much a must if you're doing .NET because the alternatives such as SharpDevelop aren't as good and are behind the 8 ball.

If you're doing any .NET stuff, I recommend you grab Visual Studio 2005.

VS 2005 is probably the best IDE there is. But it only works for MS languages, so it blows.

If you need to work with VB, .Net, C++, etc, then VS2005 is the best you can get on the windows platform.

I'm going to be going crazy with VS 2005 again soon as when I move to the UK I'm going to probably be doing mostly contract .NET work.

When I went from my J2EE job to a .NET job originally, I was going from Eclipse to VS 2003. Just about drove me crazy. I realised how much I missed Eclipse when I came back to it for my current PHP stuff.

VS 2005 is a vast improvement over VS 2003 though, it's pretty sex.

I will be focusing on C++ and Java. What are the reasons (if any) that make it better than Eclipse? This will be rudimentary programming, I'm still learning.

For C++ using windows libraries... it is better. For Java, Eclipse is superior. A lot of this stuff is personal preference.
