I'm going to replace my Maxima with one of these. Either one will be 2002 - 2004, less than 60k miles with manual trans.

With no other factors considered, which one should I get?

Both are nice cars. I think I'd have to go with a WRX. The Miata is nice, but the newer ones are a lot nicer. I really liked the '02-'04 WRX's. They look mean and are pretty good when it comes down to performance. I'll give the Miata one thing, I hear it's a fun car and it's nice and low to the ground. It's a hard pick, but I've heard the older Miata's are not that fast at all. If you're looking for a fun sports car, maybe go for the Miata, but if you're looking for all around car, go for the WRX. You could always lower the WRX to get closer handling and feel to the Miata (struts/springs installed for under $1,000 CND). The Subaru will probably take a better beating as well if you're rough on cars (driving wise).

WRX. I'm in the market for one too. the miata is too small and underpowered for my needs.

I keep saying that to myself. But, every time I drive one, I think "This car kicks ass!"

"for your needs." Yeah right, riceboy, you need a better power:weight ratio than 166 horsepower in a 2500 pound car. Just admit you feel emasculated without a wing on the trunk.

The Miata is not in the same class as the WRX. The WRX is for people who wish they had the resources to drive competitively. The Miata is for people who know damn well they're never going to drive competitively, but want to have fun anyway. Not to mention you can put the top down on a Miata when the weather's nice.

miatas are a blast. bolt on a supercharger and you'll eat wrx's all day.

subies are overrated imo. i'm just not a fan of awd.

Then you have already answered your own question. I got rid of my miata for a bigger, faster, turbo 4 door, and have regretted it ever since. Life is too short to drive boring boxes.

WRX with out a doubt. I doubt you'd apprecite a Miata after driving around in a Max. Sti would feel just at home.

Gotta say WRX, unless you have another vehicle. The Miata is a nice car, sure, until you need to go grocery shopping, or pick up something large, or move somthing, or take more than one other person somewhere. If you have a another vehicle that can do that stuff, then the Miata would be a sweet second car. But if this will be your only car, go WRX. A friend of mine at work has a Mazdaspped Miata, and he loves it, but all the above stuff is stuff he told me, and he's glad he has a truck besides the Miata for those reasons.

WTF dude? Can you put 2 child seats in the miata? That's what I meant with "my needs".

Mm. I can understand the need for space. What I was reacting to was not "too small for my needs", but "too small and underpowered for my needs."

Kudos on avoiding the minivan purchase that tends to accompany having kids.

We have an Xterra, we don't really need two 5-seat vehicles.

Get the MX-5 because everyone and their fullsik cuz Stavros has a WRX. Modify it later if you feel like more squirt. MX-5 is all about handling, none of that understeery WRX crap ;)

one of my friends just got a miata, and damn that thing is fun. It is by no means a comfortable car so going from a max to that is a pretty big jump, but the shifter on that car is nothing short of amazing as are it's handling characteristics...feels like glue going around the corners.
