    Accept this.

ANd furthermore, MGMT is more progressive than most 'progressive' bands listed here in this forum.

I didn't have the impression those bands were really similar.

I just listened to some songs on their myspace.. why are you comparing these two bands? Because of the vocals? :ugh:

LOl I dont know what made me compare the two. Maybe the whole 2 man band thing... Some of Management's songs are discoish some are comparable to mars volta. Both bands are the best america has to offer at the moment respectively. Well Kings Of Leon is the best but they arent this type of sound. I kind of hear a similarity between mgmt and tmv, mgmt being more psychedelic, more smoke-friendly. Tmv vocals are not supplementary in my opinion. Sometimes his voice breaks and he sounds decent but then hes right back into banshee mode. Either way, Mgmt appear to make better songs and I cant wait to hear what they come with next. [IMG]

I like dance-rock kind of stuff so these guys aren't that bad. I'm not disagreeing with you either, as The Mars Volta has gotten way too self-indulgent since their beautiful debut album.

i like mgmt and am pretty apathetic on the mars volta thing but i have to respectfully disagree that they are the best two bands in america.

Off the top of my head as far as current/relevant, American rock bands doing progressive-like things:

    Comets on Fire
    Battles
    Bardo Pond
    Animal Collective
    Menomena
    Grails
    TV On the Radio

I would also like to say Built to Spill, Dinosaur Jr and Sonic Youth although I understand they are no longer at the peaks of their careers and might not qualify the same way.

Anyway, I just don't think the Mars Volta can be considered such a great band when At the Drive-In was far and away so much better. And although I like MGMT well enough, they haven't done anything unique in their debut and could very easily fail to make any lasting impression. Look at Bloc Party and how their doing the UK indie rock thing well for one CD made them look promising, but then after their 2nd album, it was evident they were nothing special.

You could say Battles is pretty untested too, but the band members do have a history and Battles debut was definitely far and away more unique and yet to be replicated with as much success.

Oh, shit, actually... download the album Giraffes? Giraffes! - More Skin with Milk Mouth and tell me that doesn't absolutely kill what the Mars Volta have been doing.

I find Amputechture the most listenable, although alot of people hate on that album.

I dont see anything special in Mars Volta and I just brought them up because they seem so heralded around here. I think that you need to spend more time with Oracular Spectacular and also pay attention to the lyrics and give them some thought. Its pretty obvious that it is a themed album and not particularly who they are. I think MGMT is capable of some wild and amazing music outside of this, thats what is so captivating. Its the songwriting.

I will check out Giraffes tonight

oh and I downloaded Battles last summer and they failed to snag me. I might give them another try. It was the album with the mirrors right?
