What's the general consensus on schooling for photogs?

I'm about to graduate with a BA and I have no idea what I want to do. One of the few things I enjoy doing is photography. I know "you should keep it a hobby," but what am I going to get out of an MFA in photography (from say, RIT or the like... not Brooks).

Am I just going to end up shooting weddings? :hs:

I think photography is really making the most out of your situation. Some of the most famous photographers in the world never stepped foot inside of a photo school, and almost certainly never got a MFA. I'm going to RIT, but that's because i wanted to go to a school that gave me really good connections to the outside photography world, and so far i'm getting those connections almost every week.

bottom line is if you want to shoot weddings you're going to, but if you really want to apply yourself to the field you love most then it's going to happen.

Youre going to pay a ton of money for connections. Theres nothing magical that goes on there.

Something totally different, but: it seems like a lot of photographers of yesteryear began their careers as war correspondents. Capa- (pretty much everybody at Magnum, lol) seemed to go overseas first.

I really have no direction, so I'm thinking about trying to get setup in the military with a photog assignment. If that happens I'd have school paid for and would have a shit-load of experience too :hs:

work for hire, us gov (and corps can do this too) hires you, and in the way they do so the copyright belongs to them.

you know there is a reason why people who graduate from RIT go on and work with platon + major major corporations....but i don't know maybe i'm wrong. you're probably on the right track for making a living from taking pictures.

I was thinking about that too. I've never shot anything like a wedding. I prefer street and nature/landscapes.

I don't really see myself shooting a wedding though. :o

the good part about being a college professor is that it gives you access to all of the resources the school has for free.

this means computers, software, printers, other professors expertise, etc.

You can continue your progression in photography in whatever path it takes you...

What is competition like for photo profs? You know?

At my school (like 12,000) students, there is one lousy photography class (black and white)

    I live in Ithaca. :dunno:

If I end up doing what I laid out above, I'll likely end up at RIT.
