Ordered a metallic print from MPIX to see what its like. Only one I had seen prior was the sample print from Pictage.

    Papers used:
    MPIX Kodak Metallic
    Ilford Gallerie Smooth Pearl
    LumiJet Portfolio Series Ultra Gloss

    Observations about the metallic print:

Much higher color saturation, most notably in the red channel,
Highlights are pretty good, only losing the very end. This was a pleasant surprise.
Shadow detail is actually a bit better than the other prints. Very surprising.
CA showed up more (probably due to higher saturation)

The Lumijet held highlight detail much much better than the others. But the shadow detail wasn’t as good.
The Ilford was probably the best overall of the ink jet prints.

Original File, wanted a contrasty failry saturated image to start with.

hard to tell from the photos, but I think the metallic looks good. the colour of the horse / ground.. really stands out & seems to have good contrast.

yeah, i didn't want to set up a whole project for the shots, the review is more important.

they're pretty sweet. I probably need to order some more, particulary of different toned people and should be a nerd and do a color chart too

I heard metallic prints are not recommended for portraits. Is this true?

dunno yet, thats my next sample I'll get. I could think a normal portrait would be kinda funky. Maybe a high school senior portrait, but probably not a family portrait. dunno yet though.

Nice pic. The house kind of takes you out of the fairy tale though. Fixed it just for kicks.

This may be a little bit offtopic but when you order Metallic they come out more saturated....when you order Matte, do they come out darker or did I just forget to add to the comments not to "enhance" it (I'm talking about elcolor.com). I'm ordering a few prints for my portfolio and I don't wanna have the same extremely dark look again.

    Why is that?

I don't like how overly saturated they come out with Glossy and I've never tried Metallic.
