So I finally played this game for the first time. Got it from Gamefly and got through the first act in about 3 hours or so last night.

    Graphics: 10/10
    Sound & Music: 9/10
    Gameplay: 8/10
    Story: ?/10

Only Metal gears I have played are the two originals on the NES. I never could get into the PS1/PS2 games. I can appreciate this game for what it is. I think it is the best looking and best flowing game I have played in years. I would probably rate it the best game of the next gen systems.

    However

I don't know what the fuck is going on. I also don't like the whole Japanese Soap Opera kinda shit. It more annoys me than anything.

I am still on the fence on if I should mail this out tonight or just sit through it and beat it.

Overall I can understand the hype and honestly its one of the few games I think stands up to the hype. But the story is just right over my head. I am getting it - I just don't really care about it nor care about any of the actors in it.

Any input on if I should just carry on or mail it back?

Ive played all of them and still dont have a fucking clue what was going on. Things get a little clearer further down the line however.

Theres a metal gear wiki that will explain the things youre unsure of. Dont send it back. While it may have a over-complicated story its by far one of the best PS3 experiences to date.

I will stick with it then. Might as well. I can see how this game is pure greatness. I am just not tied into the characters yet.

So I am just playing it on normal to get through it right now - How long will it take me yall think?

You've given it really high rankings, but you don't know if you want to keep playing it? :hsugh:

I agree, though. The story is way too far-fetched and needlessly complex/confusing.

I guess since I work as a video/audio tester I find it easy to separate myself from it and look at it objectively. I can tell its a bad ass game. But I can also tell it doesn't suit me 100%. Its kinda like Assassins Creed. Its one of my fav games ever and prob out of the 35 games I have on the 360 it is my favorite. But I understand why people give it so much hate.

MG4 seems more like a work of art to me. As such I can appreciate it for that.

10 to 15 hours then - I will go through it.

My only two qualms with the game are 1) You watch instead of play for WAY too much of it, and 2) The story is so convoluted and Japanesey, it doesn't make sense.

MGS4 was great. if you played 1-3 it would make a lot more sense since it ties together a lot of the past events. i dont know what you mean by japanese soap opera.

it took me about 23 hours i think my first play through. i played it 3 or 4 times back to back and got the big boss rank.

Probably the best game I've ever played. Final Fantasy X comes so close I can't decide which I enjoyed more.

I havent played 4 yet, but Ive played all of the others and it seems like the story would be really, really hard to understand if you havent played the previous games. Dont pretty much all of the past characters come back for at least a cameo?

    try this:
Watch the Metal Gear Retrospective videos. you'll get a general outline of WTF is going on, and also the history of the game/genre so you can really appreciate the way it's meant to be played.

this game, as far as i've tried, does not play well unless you play it in the way it's meant to be played (kinda like a Racing Simulation game. if you play it like a Racing Arcade game, it won't be fun.)

stick through it. i just kinda let myself get caught up in the story, and the extremely long cutscenes.

there is a really good part near the end as the game is about to reach its climax that i found really moving - i won't spoil it, but it asks you to do something difficult and tedious and, ultimately physically painful....but simultaneously onscreen shows you what your motivation is to complete the task. F'ing awesome.

also, it's the only game i've ever played through more than once. the second time, on the harder difficulty, revealed more interesting stuff, and that was worth it.

Try playing the game without killing anyone (it's hard, but it's worth it). That was one of the things that Kojima talked about with the game - they give you this HUGE selection of guns, but only one non-lethal gun. it's super-easy to be evil, and difficult (But rewarding) to be good. Kojima used a game mechanic to make a statement, and it works.

    etc etc

Been there and I didn't bother with the t-shirt.

Will be sticking with the game. I will take the advice of some and do some reading on the previous games.

why on earth would it be the same? you can't possibly beat the game without tranquilizing OR killing anyone.
