Obviously groups that incorporate elements of both rap and metal are fairly popular such as the aforementioned Korn, Rage Against the Machine, Deftones, and my personal fav who unfortunately broken up, Stuck Mojo.

Do you consider these groups metal (why/why not)? Or alternatively, are they are a genre of metal or just another genre of music?

I personally don't have a strong opinion about the whole thing, though I have to confess that when I think of metal I usually view Iron Maiden circa Powerslave/Number of the Beast as the prototypical metal band and then judge all others in similarity. I also perceive metal as tending toward minor keys (tone-wise) and eschewing the blues influences prominent in post-British invasion rock and roll.

:werd: There's even debate about what the genres are let alone how to classify music.

Korn is FAR from metal IMO.

Then again I don't classify my own music, I just call it all rock and any sub genres is up to the people I tell.

I like everything from Atreyu, God Forbid, Killswitch Engage, As I Lay Dying, Meshuggah, Shadows Fall, Children of Bodom, Dragonforce, and the list goes on and on and on to Metallica and some alternative rock. I can't classify what metal is anymore because I feel, as the previous posters said, it doesn't mean anything. You like whatever music you like :wiggle:

Korn is nothing but Nu-Metal crap that was a fad. As far as genres, I am hardcore about bands being classified in whatever genre they play to keep them from getting grouped with shit like Korn, which is pretty much insulting to real metal bands.

Nu-metal. I was at a get-together at a friends house the other night and two of the people there were talking about how much they loved "metal like Linkin Park, Chevelle, Disturbed, Korn and Slipknot"

I honestly wanted to scream. :hsd:

I liked the crazy instruments they used and the arrangement.
I really didn't care for Jonathan Davis singing.
If it was all instrumental then it would be better.

I went to see them pretty much only knowing the songs "Not Promised Tomorrow" and "Rising" (which had just come out) and ended up having a great time. One of my top four or five all time favorite shows. Everybody in the place was jumping for the entire show.

not promised tomorrow by stuck mojo was a freakin awesome track man.. the heaviest guitar sound for a hardcore band.. (on the sleeve of the first album they got this tag new york hardcore if im not mistaken)

but for me, bands like linkin park, korn or limp bizkit are just rock bands with heavy guitar sounds. Judas Priest is more metal then them IMO.

As geeky as it sounds, I make my own genres.
And KoRn is not metal, but prolly alternative rock, while Rage I'd just call alternative.
