i've been reading a lot lately. read through my owner's manual, and im re-reading two Scott Kelby books I had. well anyways, i've been messing around and getting used to the camera, i don't have a tripod, work on night shift, and don't have any off-camera flash yet, so i've been trying to make the best of it. anyways, here are some pictures of coworkers i took last night that i thought turned out ok.

maybe a slight adjustment on the white balance to the warmer end, the florescent lights is making them look like corpses... beyond that not too bad.

i see what you mean. every time i took looked at my pictures on the lcd (not these, but others) i thought it was maybe too warm. ill retry tonight a little warmer and see how it looks
same problem here too i guess, lcd made them look a little too dark at the time so i lightened them up in camera.

when shooting in full manual, do you make adjusments so that the meter is in the middle?

the meter im talking about looks something like this:

    + |---l---0---l---| -

for the white balance, just fix that in post. nothing drastic, just slight adjustment there. i think you're talking about the bracketing, but i'm a canon guy, so i couldn't tell you about your nikon :dunno:

Don't know. Friend of mine is a serious movie buff, so he's always looking for what's coming next, in production, etc... just told me about chan and miagi a couple of weeks ago.

The light meter in the camera is just something to give you a ballpark. Depending on what metering mode your camera is in, it is just telling you when what it is looking at is matching the exposure of 18% grey. Your camera, and it's reflective light meter dont know what theyre looking at or really how much light is coming in. They can be easily fooled and the meter should really just be a guide. You may have to sometimes over or underexpose your picture according to the meter in order to get a properly metered scene.

See, the problem is, in camera reflective light meters (as oppoed to hand-held incident light meters) try to make everything 18% grey. This means that if it sees a predominantly black scene, and you go buy what the meter tells you, it will overexpose the scene in order to try to bring that black up to grey. In such a case, you would need to realize this and set the little tick mark a couple clicks under the middle. For predomoinantly white/bright scenes, it may be the opposite. Almost all in-camera meters are different and what it does can vary greatly by what metering mode youre using.
