I remember reading an interview of Machida and how he says that many fighters prepare their body but not their spirit, I found this very interesting and noticed that Machida isn't talking about being super cocky or anything but just being spiritually and mentally strong.

Training both the body and the mind. What do you guys do to help yourself mentally?

2 days before a big tournament I take my ipod, put on reggae or something super chill, and walk. Usually up to 4 hours and in no particular direction. I think about every situation and pretty much force myself to repeat over and over:

I am fast, I am strong, I am skilled. I want to win, I can win, I will win.

I always feel like crap whenever I smoke weed but thats also probably because I've only smoked like 5-6 times my whole life :o And half of that happened in the last 6 months. :dunno: I don't think its for me, I usually always pass out.

I can't tell if Tony is being serious or not, but it helps . It keeps my spirit up and I'm usually always in a good mood, except for the odd day. If I'm in a bad place mentally after work and I smoke a bowl, I am a lot more relaxed and happy. I also like to smoke a joint after I spar and have a headache/pain, it gets rid of it right away. I would recommend what Hillary does though, better on your lungs :wavey:

I'm actually surprised you've smoked that many times in your life being Asian. I've just found it's something Asians generally don't do and if my gf's mom ever found out, I'd be a dead man walking. The reason you probably feel like crap is you just smoked a little and then probably none the rest of the night, you gotta keep puffin nigga.

They usually sell it but don't do it, the smart business plan way, and not the stupid ass white kid that'll never turn a profit from smoking it all.

I'm not saying you guys don't, I just notice there are less than say white people. Maybe it's the fact white people are just more open about it. My one buddy I worked at EA with is chinese and smoked a fatty with Eddie Bravo when he came to Vancouver a few months ago, I couldn't make it to that seminar T_T. (He trains at Dynamic)

Being relaxed before a fight/game makes a huge difference to your energy levels. The ability to think clearly under pressure is something most people dont have.

so so true. Went to a muay thai smoker on the weekend- there were a few fights where it was the persons first time. You could tell- most of them were so nervous and high strung they would go all out without any control and gas out...one guy got tko'd/leg kicks and other guy got tko'd/accumilated damage.
Im sure they both could have been better but they were for sure NOT relaxed.

I think the mental part is important during day to day. I can definitely feel improvement after going 100% either on the mats or in the gym.

The mental aspect is what makes GSP such a monster now too (IB greasing comment). the other major sports have figured it out, and mixed martial artists are just now starting to learn that it takes a well prepared body AND mind to compete at the highest level.

I think we'll see more and more fighters mentally preparing for fights similar to Machida and GSP once those two go on huge streaks of title defenses.
