OS X does not support h.264 offloading to the GPUs (except for new Nvidia chipset macs). So VLC nor damn near any other problem will play a 720p on anything less than a 2.4GHz+ C2D. Even if it supported, VLC has poor codecs and won't even offload in windows.

Only real option is Plex, which is a multithreaded media app.

Quicktime plays mkv files on my mbp. It's just a codec download or something.

Whether or not it's 720 or 1080 I'm not sure, but the resolution doesn't go that high anyway so :dunno:

I am using my 2.0 C2D and 4gb Ram macbook to play 720p movies and 99% of the time I have had no problems with VLC, except for subtitles not showing when another language is spoke.
Like when watching the Zohan movie when he pulls out the device that tells you about the person there is supposed to be writing that appears on the screen. With VLC it does not show but with Quicktime it does. :hsd: Oh and VLC seems to run smoother than QT on my Macbook.

Ya the new models are the first that can offload to the GPU.
