Before I completely format and start from scratch again (I thought I wouldn't have to do this with an osx machine?), are there any programs or apps I should try running to find the reasons as to the sluggishness?

Slower than normal startup, slow application startup..

MBP 2.16GHz, 3GB RAM, Running tiger with all latest updates.. .4.11 I think?

did you try a permissions repair? Usually OSX doesn't have this problem but when it does, permissions file structure are the first place I look.

OnyX. Run all the scripts under "Maintaince" and run the "cleaning" part as well. it should help.

    I heart onyx..

I was running late and couldn't grab my laptop to bring to work, so I won't be able to update until tonight.

also booting into single user mode (command+s) and then running fsck -fy is good to do to.
