mazda has always over-rated cars..it happened with the Miata in 00', and more recently the RX8..most of those don't even make 200whp:ugh:

Considering it is the same engine as in the Mazdaspeed 6, they had to detune the 3 slightly so it wouldnt be faster than the 6. If Mazda didnt detune it, they would have a very hard time selling the 6. Wait for people to start modding them and finding out how to free up some more hp. Don't be too quick to judge this little car, especially based on a dyno run on a completely bone stock car.

The issue with that, just like the 6 is there is NO aftermarket support for it. My freind has a Speed6, and he can't find a turboback exhaust. All the downpipes they make currently have a cat built into them.

Give it more time and there will be mods available. The speed6 hasnt been out that long. Also, why can't he just get a custom exhaust made? Take it to any good muffler shop and they can fab one up. The aftermarket support may not be big because Mazda isnt producing a large number of the cars.

The engines arent that difficult to work with, many existing parts can be made to work, ie: turbos, injectors, intercoolers, etc. Freeing up some power on the MZR 2.3 DISI is pretty much the same with any other turbo cars, give it more air, fuel and spark. Sometimes you just need to be creative with your choice of parts. ;)

No place will make him a system, becuase in Ohio they get fined like 20,000 dollars if they don't add a cat.

And according to him, no one has figured out how to tune the car/upgrade it, because of the fuel system.

Wow, that is pretty sad to hear.
I will be test-driving it at the Mazda Zoom Zoom event in LA in a couple of weeks. :)

You gotta be shitting me. Do you have any idea how much more pollution a cat-less car makes? Catalytic converters only swipe a couple horsepower -- I have no problem with the government forcing people to have them, and I have lots of problems with people who bitch about being forced to have them. You're "butt dyno" is not going to feel the improvement in power, but the people behind you in traffic are going to smell the increased emissions.

Maybe at near stock boost and no supporting mods, their is a nice difference when you have all supporting mods, double or more stock boost, etc. You do feel it.

Am I the only one in this thread who takes into account drivetrain loss?

For example I saw a stock 6.0L GTO lose 80HP on the dyno, I would say its possible to make 263HP at the crank and have only 216HP go to the wheels.

for the most part ive only seen drivetrain loss taking this substantial amount of power away in AWD cars, shit these numbers are damn close to the figures that a stock evo gets.

amirite in saying that fwd incurs the least amount of drivetrain loss out of all configurations with a front engine? or is it rear? all i know is a loss this huge shouldnt happen in a fwd car

AWD loses the most hp in drivetrain loss.

But the mazdaspeed 3 is FWD and the number 216/263hp means that they have 20% drivetrain loss. lol.

Contrary to the civic, 8% drivetrain loss.

I wonder if the 3 has some of the issue's the RX-8 had with Dyno's due to the ecu going ape shit about the different wheel speeds, or lack of any rear wheel movement at all.

What happened to the days of the 626/mx-6 GT's where wheel hp was as high or higher than the factory rating, with 100k miles on the motor?

Not in a FWD car. The drivetrain loss is a LOT less than a RWD car.

I think there's something wrong with the dyno, not the car, especially as much as everyone has been praising it.

I guess I should have been more specific. There's a problem in how the car is dynoed. Remember the traction control issues involved with the RX-8?
