    so i got a '95 626 v6 w/AT

at idle, in neutral it's buzzing about 1600rpm
hit the button for a/c and not much happens
jumps to ~1700 when the compressor kicks in and drops back when not
    same #'s in park

at idle, in drive, rpms drop to ~675-750, and jump by roughly 30-50 when a/c compressor kicks in

no loss of power at any time, and i'm getting 15-20mpg, usualy the lower end of that range, when previously i was getting 27mpg (long story, worth the read and may help to figure out my question - posted below)

question is: are these normal numbers or are they off by a mile?

here's the long story, posted on another forum quite a while ago:

so, headed to PA for g-dad's funeral on thursday

picked up a bro (other had to work/look after 6mo old, so couldn't make it) and dad at bro's place
dump everything in the trunk for a 2 day trip and head out

    nooooooo problems, all systems normal

    right?

    right.

been running 75-85 the whole way, after replacing the fuel filter and an oil change

12 miles from destination, the check engine light comes on for about 30 seconds, then goes off

    uh oh...

about 2 min later (we've been off the hwy for 10 min at least by this point) the engine starts running rough, very badly - then the brakes become quite hard to use, no power assist

so we figured a vaccuum hose came loose or something
pull into a gas station to check and see nothing out of the ordinary, so we keep going

took to a local mazda dealer the next morning and then go off to the services

went back about 3 hours later to check and see if they found the hose

turns out it's not a hose, and here's where my migrane kicks into overdrive (it had started as soon as the check engine light came on)

mechanic comes to the lobby with a rag in his hand - and you know the feeling you get when you see something like that happen?

    yeah. that one.

he shows me *part* of a camshaft and tells me it's mine and it's broken
and i need a NEW ENGINE :eek4: :squint:

i'm thinking camshaft stops moving, vavles down, holes in piston, bent and broken everythings...

i ask about what it's gonna cost and how long it'll take
"$2250 for a used engine with 70-80k installed, and can get it done by sat morning" - which helps as that's when we were gonna leave anyway

another 700 and i can get another damn car!

i took the broken part and the numbers to dad and he says call the dealer and say "go ahead", but i called my mech/dealer at home to see if they can work a better price, and he says bring it back up here and he can deal with it
he even trusts me with his tax id # and uhaul account (these guys rock ) to take care of that - but the acct wasn't a national one (w/e), so dad pays out of pocket for that to get it up here ($247 when we dropped it off up here)

so sat morning we get to the dealer and load up, but before that, i pop open the hood and have a look and it sure as hell looks like the dealer did NOTHING to the car. i can't see any evidence they opened a camshaft cover of did anything to this engine to make the determination that a broken camshaft is the problem :squint:
by this time i'm figuring they be trying to scam me outta $2200
"hey! we got a out-of-stater! let's ream him! he'll never be back!"

oh, i did mention a migrane right? and it kicked into overdrive? how about now i can't even SEE? 1 steady image and 1 pulsing left/right, both fuzzy

suprisingly, a uhaul F350 with a V10 can haul ASS and do it nicely :) made it down there in roughly 4 1/2 hours, counting traffic - took 5 to get back without traffic

anyway, dumped the car at the shop and went home

today, i get up early and go to the shop and see what's what
(migrane still going strong, of course)

explained the situation to the mechanic and he says he'll get to look at it asap
2 hours later i call up and they say come on down
(10 min walk from home helps)

    i get there and sur-praahse sur-praahse sur-praahse

it *IS* the fuckin camshaft! :O

    w
    t
    f

    95 Mazda 626 V6 with 95,6K on it
just how damn often does a camshaft break on a standard consumer sedan???? (gee, guess that dealer was right :wtc: )

mech tells me he'll just replace the whole head, as this engine doesn't have the problem with valves/pistons

roughly $300 for parts, labor dunno yet, and a rental car for several days

    pics below for your amuesment:

    as if that wasn't enough.....

so XP had been acting strange :mb: crap about XP i fixed...

    ...jump ahead 2 days...

got a call from the cop shop about my car (91 acclaim) has to be moved - someone complained about it 'cuz it's been sitting around for about 2 months with no plates on it (and a for sale sign)
the engine was about to throw a rod, so i parked it and bought the mazda

so, 5 hours later i find a junkyard to come get it for free
if i could have driven it there i would have gotten $50 for it, but with no plates and a dead engine...
net loss of well over $2000 i put into it to keep it running , sooooo many new parts...
about an hour before the truck got there, i started the engine, and stomped on the gas
it ran at full rpm for about 40 seconds before something caused the rpm's to slow down a bit - and about 20 seconds later stopped hard with a loud bang

yep - put a hole in the engine block yay

it was a good car for the 3 yrs i had it

    .......2 days later.....

turned off my monitor, and just as it was i see a new email come in, so i turn it back on

    and it doesn't come on...

just a line of bright down the center of the screen pulsing between 2" and 4" across

now i get to suffer with a 14" monitor at 800x600
it's like looking through a keyhole

a replacement's gonna cost me about $100 plus shipping if i go the ebay way

oh, and the mazda still isn't fixed but i /should\ have it monday

so - what's next to break or fall apart?

    next post:

got my car back last tuesday

had it for roughly 6 hours and it overheats and cracks the head that was just replaced.

apparently, they "forgot" to get the replacement head checked before doing all the work

i was lucky enough to get it to the shop before it closed for the night and walked home

i'm told it should be fixed "by friday"

friday came and went, no car

"we'll get it done by monday, i'll have the mech come in on sat and work on it"

    monday, can you guess what?

mech says he never had a chance to get to it, AND, i'm told they forgot to re-order the head bolts (these kind you can use only once)

so i tell him to get me a car and a plate, he calls a rental agcy and he's paying for it

    that's good i guess...

but, i'll not get my car back for a while as there's at least 4 ahead of me and parts weren't delivered by mon. after noon
meaning at least late tuesday before my car gets in
meaning at least wed. night before i can get it
meaning it'll be thursday afternoon before i can get there
meaning add another day for whatever reasons
meaning it'll be friday before i get my car back

i'll be sure to not turn in the rental until i give the engine a beating for a few hours to be sure it's actually done correctly

want something else to add into this mix?
    i knew you did

battery backup just died about 2 hrs ago
    no warning, no reason
just no longer passes power through it
it was powering my speakers, a monitor and a few usb devices

    there goes another $50

    next post:

    so, friday comes around

    no car

"we'll be pulling it apart today and send the head out to get checked. you should have it back tuesday"

    right. we'll see

went to talk to the guys today and find out i won't get my car back until at least thursday now

i'm told they're replacing both heads

    wtf...

    update:

    are you FUCKING kidding me???

so, the car was supposed to be done friday before last friday
    of course not
    then, last monday
    uh huh, right
then wednesday so i could have it to take vaca
    riiiiight
    didn't happen of course
so i leave for vacation with the rental and i park it at the airport , sucking up w/e they're paying for it per day

was told it would be done by monday, "no question"
get back from vaca late last night about midnight monday and go to get it today

"oh we were just about to call you"

apparently, they got it done on friday, but neglected to bother calling me and letting me know

hand off the rental, get in mine and drive off as if all's well

    well, it's not

runs VERY rough, as if the timing is off, which isn't suprising since the entire engine was taken apart
but hell, i expected it to be at least running right, not just running since they've fucking had it for OVER A FUCKING MONTH :squint: :squint:

so, get to run around to do a few things i need and go to lunch
get out from lunch and come up to the car and what do i see?

yeah, nice big CHUNK taken out of the bumper

i thought the car was done, i didn't bother to go infront when i picked it up and pop the hood, i know what it looks like

if i did i sure as hell wold have seen that bumper

i flip out and race back to the shop jut about as fast a possible while not hitting anyone or running a red light

left a nice 50' skid mark in the lot at the shop when i got there
and just laid into the shop mgr hard

i point to the bumper and tell him about the engine running rough

seems everyone at the shop knew about the bumper but NO ONE told me about it

i'm told that the mechanic ran it into the corner of the door when he was moving it into the bay to work on it

BUT NO ONE TOLD ME ABOUT IT :squint: :squint: :squint:

i could have gone for a week or more without noticing it if i hadn't parked in a spot where i would approach it from the front after parking

if any one of them had simply said "oh hey, we goofed on the bumper, we'll take care of it" then i'd have said "ok" and left it at that

    but noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

i drive off as if everything's done and not a word said to me

good thing the rental co. hadn't come to pick up their car yet
i slapped my keys on the counter, grabbed the rental car's keys and told them i'll pick mine up tomorrow at 5pm and it had better be fucking fixed

    we'll see

    got it back today

runs quite rough at idle in drive (automatic) (~750rpm)

steering wheel shakes a bit and it didn't at all when i 1st bought it

in neutral/park it jumps to about 12-1400 rpm and it's smooth

seems to be running normal other than that

we'll see how long it lasts

    << still not happy

    next post:

pulled the + battery cable off to put in the power line for my amps which i can now start getting into the install process

get that set, stick it back on and tighten it down and head off to the body shop cuz i can't figure how to get the interior panels off to run the cables under the carpet

find out it's ez remove - they just pop off [IMG]

    but

now my alarm doesn't beep at me for arm/disarm (not even fully sure if it auto-arms now either) and the O/D switch on the stick doesn't put the O/D on or off any longer unless it's in park

    what the hell? :ugh:

O/D seems to be stuck in the ON position - which i gues is fine, but i like to take it off for passing besides the fact that now there's something else (2 more things really) that need fixing

how do i get rid of a curse?

    next post:

all in all a normal day so far

about 30 seconds after i get moving i notice a line on the windshield

on closer inspection it's a freekin' CRACK :squint:

wtf, i mean REALLY - c'mon on now

called ins co. and of course i have no glass coverage ( didn't tell them i had a crack, just asked about the coverage)

another minute or so, i look over to my right and

another crack, from the right side  :sadwavey:

neither are from chips, they've just simply appeared

    i don't get it...

    next post:

    need more?

    of course you do!!

cruising along on the way to a job, suddenly the tach jumps up n down and the check engine light comes on and the car doesnt' wanna stay in gear...

great. 75k from home, no idea where the hell in FL i am and it's raining hard

get to a gas station, pop the hood see nothing wrong, wait 15 min and start up again, figure i'm only 8 miles from destination, that'll be ok

make it to the onramp and everything goes pbbbbbbbbt at me again

another 15 min to back down the ramp with all the traffic and make it to a lube n' go, with 3 ppl working there none of which speaka de englees very well
find a mechanic H^H^ tire sales store and the mech looks at it, goes around the block and says there's nothing wrong

    w/e

get back on the highway and make it home

call around to see who knows good mechanics here and no one knows so i look online and find one
    but
he says he can't diagnose because his equipment isn't working
3 calls later i get a guy who says bring it over

10 min after that we find it's a broken, not just faulty but actually broken, coolant temp sensor

    $133 installed

i finish this post and headed over there to get it fixed, after coming back here to make calls to see who i can borrow the $ from...

    cars hate me.

    so that's the story

maybe it will help answer the question?:sadwavey:

    to add:

in the situation where it's been sitting overnight and it's rained hard, the engine runs a bit rough, like it's almost out of gas
the problem goes away after about 15 min of driving, after things have warmed up
it doesn't happen if it hasn't rained :dunno:

buy a fucking beater escort/corolla/civic for like $500 instead of continuing to dump money into that pile of shit while you save for another car, dumbass.
