Who would you say is/was an all around better singer or who do you prefer?
No question in my mind.
Cool thanks for the vote.
Agreed... Layne is better in so many ways, one example is his awesome ability to write harmonies.
Woah close race so far!
fuck them both.
that is a very close one, but layne gets my vote
manyard doesn't have a signature voice, and that is what makes him great
Layne Staley... No N in his last name, by the way, had pipes, thats for sure. I've never been that impressed by maynards stuff.
Layne ftw, rest his soul. I'm not saying Maynard sucks; in fact, I rather like his vocals. But to me, he doesn't have a signature voice, so he doesn't really add any twang or grit to the sound of the music. It's like comparing grits from one Denny's to the next Denny's when the voice isn't signature. But when you get a voice as painful and melodically influenced as Layne's, it's like comparing momma's grits to Denny's grits. Sure, the Denny's around the corner has some great grits...but they're still Denny's grits.
I like and repsect em' both as vocalists (R.I.P Layne), but I find Keenan the more diverse of the two, so he gets my vote.
Wow, must have never listened to a TOOL album.
My thoughts exactly.
Tool's one of my favorite bands but I just don't think his voice is as good.
See, I have to disagree with most of you here. Part of the mystique that surrounds Layne's signature sound....half of that has to do with Cantrell. He helped create that multi-layered vocal sound that, while absolutely classic, is not all Layne's. Not saying that it's a bad thing, just saying.
I like Maynard better. There's more evil and suspense in the way he sings, plus I believe he has more range.
i love maynards voice in "the pot"
I didn't know that, but good info.
I love AiC's vocal sound.
Maynard is the greatest rock vocalist in the history of music.
