I'm looking to get a "beginner" crossbow. Not one of these toy modes, but one in the $500 range.

Problem is that I know nothing about types/brands/pros/cons/ of each brand and what features I should be looking for or avoiding.

    Anyone care to educate me?

Every fall, I say to myself "next year, I'm gonna get a crossbow..." I bought one years ago from The Edge Co (long since defunct). Not a compound, but it was fun going shooting with it, and it has special memories for me (siiigh). Anyway, I've been meaning to ask in here, too, if anyone has recommendations.

Why not go with a real bow?

Some people don't have any interest in using a bow but would like to hunt all of archery season.

Crossbows also offer an alternative to folks who may have physical problems handling a bow. I know a guy with one functioning arm, and loves his crossbow. It would be impossible for him to use a regular bow. But something as common as a shoulder injury could also make drawing a bow quite difficult.
