Which is better? Maya's more expensive, and it was used for all the final fantasy games, so that automatically bumps it up on my assumptions list.

If you don't know wtf you are doing, you are better off with Max. Maya is a whore and a half to just start pick up and using.

There's probably more of a future in learning maya though.

3dsmax5 is more entry-level, I guess you could say, but that doesn't mean it sucks compared to Maya - both are great apps, and with v5, Max has taken drastic steps to familiarize itself with native Maya users - hotkeys and other ways of doing operations.

I don't REALLY know what I'm doing, but I randomly tugged on a sphere and messed with some controls I don't understand to make this:

It could be like, a super flying emoticon... or a testicle with testicles...

I'm willing to learn. At least it comes with tutorials. MAX doesn't have a portfolio quite as appealing as maya's.

You can do just about the same stuff with any of the packages. Maya comes standard with better lighting and rendering. Maya comes standard with cloth, fur and fluid effects.
Basic tools and whatnot are very similar between the packages if you know what you're doing. I am a maya user, so I obviously prefer it.

Maybe I should back that up...
    Maya has Fluid Dynamix
    Greater shader control and flexability
The ability to script and code for the program itself on your own
Complete access to its core software
Particle and Paint Effects far superior -

and the trump card is the fact the Maya is now used in every movie you watch... 3dmax is rarely to never used on-screen for video compositing.
