I've never really trained heavy deadlift before. I would always shoot for ~8 reps and concentrate on form, speed, and the lockout. I finally said screw it and tried to go for a max just to see where I was at. I threw on 405 hoping to be able to squeeze one out, and I busted out 3 like it wasn't shit! I could have done more but my hands started slipping off the bar because the knurling was worn down smooth just about and I didnt have chalk.

Not the most weight ever, but it definately shocked the shit out of me. Judging by how easy that went up I have no doubt I'd be able to throw 2 more plates on there and get 495....gonna try that next week. :)

Nice! What is your height and weight?

I maxed out a couple weeks ago and got a fairly easy 375. I can't wait to break the 405 mark! :big grin:

not to try to knock ya or anything, but the general rule of thumb is your 5RM +8-10% is your 1RM, though that is for trained elite lifters, so :dunno: Good luck either way.

Times like this I swear I had some possible way to take video and post online. 405 came up VERY VERY easy, so I think its possible...deadlift has always been one of those lifts that just seem to work very well for me.

and btw, DW was one of the reasons I decided to go heavy... I figure this skinny little 160lb guy is putting up over 400lbs, I might as well see what I'm made out of.

anyways, whether i get up 495 or not next week, I'll let everyone know.

I could only get up 450 when I was doing 405x5, but if you really want to max out do a warmup of with 225, and than do 315 for around 3reps, and than just add around 30-40lbs each time and do 1rep. So like
    225x12
    315x3
    345x1
    375x1
    405x1
    435x1
    455x1
    etc...

Reps don't translate well into singles with the deadlift because that first rep has no stretch reflex assisting the start of the pull. I have noticed to direct correllation between reps and singles. You may be able to come up with something if you stop and re-set each rep so it's like you're always pulling singles.

    DW is right.

Provided you can warm up your low back, maybe walk a bit first or a few hyperextensions... here is what I'd do for a 495 DL

    135 * 1
    225 * 1
    315 * 1
    405 * 1
    495 * 1

well of course, I'd be an idiot if I just walked out there and tried 495 w/o any type of warmup at all. I went up by increments on the 405 pull, I'll do the same with the 495
