These are nice man. I think the more you post the better you keep getting. I like how youre getting away from same-old, same-old action stuff. I really like #1

I don't know if you remember, but back in the summer I asked you about shooting hockey cause I had never shot it before. I remember Pm'ing you asking you for some tips and stuff.

The event was a pre-olympic hockey tournament for the women's hockey teams.

Getty sent Harry How and Bruce down to cover the tournament and scope out the venue so that they would be ready for the olympics

When I went to the media room upstairs I saw Harry who I recognized right away because I had seen alot of his work. He was walking right by so I didn't get a chance to talk with him. When the games started I got a chance to introduce myself and start talking to him. He asked if I was shooting or volunteering for the olympics and I told him know and asked if he knew of any opportunities. He said something like, we'll talk after the game or something like that. After the game, he introduced me to Bruce Bennett. I had no idea who he was at the time. Bruce told me to send him an e-mail and it all went from there.

dude figure skating would be pretty cool,
you still gonna use the d70s even though you can't strobe? or are you allowed to strobe?

Figure skating is the EASIEST thing to shoot on earth, it's wicked. you just sit in a rolling office chair type thing, and follow one person around the ice, haha.. not only that, but they all do the same routine (or it seems like it at least?), so you know exactly when all the important stuff happens. i just chill and listen to my ipod all day.

I'll use d300 because it's natural light. his operation isn't all that technical, it's pretty basic and more about quantity than quality (I'm not used to this at ALL, but it's what he goes for :dunno:), he just says to shoot jpg basic and lay on the shutter. super ghetto but people don't know the difference, so he goes that route.

fuck.. brb emailing bbennet and hhow :hsd:

I always think that sounds so gay "HI GUYS! I can shoot stuff so keep me in mind when you need someone! :hay:". I need to meet them in person sometime :o

hahaha it didn't go down like that
I didn't say I can shoot, keep me in mind
    it was more like:

hey u doing anything during the olympics?
nope, do you know any opportunities?
    e-mail Bruce

needless to say, I'm glad I asked

so no remotes at all for figure skating? or is that just a waste?

It would be a waste.. the photos where you REALLY have to freeze action (spinning, jumping, all that shit) don't actually look good because their face is always fucked up from spinning, so it doesn't really matter.

Also, it's not really my gig, I just do whatever the guy running it wants me to do, so I'm not gonna go through the effort of strobing/remotes/whatever.

Derek: Did you meet Jeff Vinnick/his editor? How old was his editor? Do you know his name?

Vancouver's got it made for photo access, best team in the league for photogs IMO

    naw dude,
I met Vinnick but I don't know he just always seemed real busy and I never really had a chance to talk with him. He was running around quite a bit doing quite a few different shoots i think.

Thats what everyone was sayin, Vinnick gets killer access. Most other teams don't want to be bothered with it, but the canucks ensure that he gets the access. the great access and his skill make for ridiculously amazing shots.

I gotta say dude, I always look at your posts (I think it sounds like a cool job! lol) and these pictures stand out from your other threads.

It's more of a journalistic approach. You're covering the whole game and not just a few actions shots. Great job! :bigthumb:

Did you ever post your setup you use for this kind of work? I mean I know you use a crazy amount of strobes, it's be cool to see how it's all setup and what all is used.

It's 16 strobes, basically evenly spaced around the catwalk directly above the ice... 8 pointed more towards the ice, 8 around the perimeter to get fans as well.

I'll take some pics next time I'm up there, could be fun to bloeurg about

not sure man, but the whole hypersync speed of the new pw's is really cool
1/500-1/640 sync with big boy cameras is dope
