When do you guys use what? Do you ever use auto/jpg?

I take a lot of snapshots of my daughter on a daily basis, so I usually use auto/jpg. I'm starting to use manual more, so I should probably start getting into the habit of switching to RAW when playing with manual or taking artsy/good pics.

Amount of time I shoot RAW = 100% of the time.

I always shoot RAW, and usually use aperture or shutter priority depending on what I'm trying to achieve. Aperture priority when I'm trying to control DOF, and shutter priority when I'm trying to stop motion, or intentionally cause blur. I'll use manual only if I can't get the desired effect.

For quick snapshots I just use Program mode. I've never used Auto.

Same here. I'd also like to add the fact that I always use RAW because if I capture that 'perfect' image (composition) in auto but it's not quite perfect (lighting, etc), i'm kind of screwed because I don't have the original digital negative to work with.

    raw all the time

manual mode 45% of the time
aperture priority 45% of the time
P mode 10% of the time for quick snaps

other than the amount of space it takes up (if you don't have a lot of storage), why not use RAW 100% of the time?

when i first started, i was scared of raw, but knew that everyone kept telling me to use it ... so i shot everything in RAW+L-JPEG. talk about using up a small card quick. and i'd never do anything with the raws other than archive them. no idea why.

    RAW all the time

I primarily use aperture priority, unless I'm using flashes then it's manual

shutter priority I only use for panning shots

RAW only when I'm setting up a specific photography shots...

JPEG majority of the time - as it is much more convenient.

A or P unless I'm actually going to spend time on the shot then M.

P only lets you set the ISO.

I shoot in RAW because OT told me to. The only thing I dont like is that my card is too slow when trying to look at the image on the camera. Im thinking of upgrading to a sandisk extreme III though.

I shoot 80% in manual so I can learn how to use it. Then I switch to any of the others when Im lazy or want quick snapshots.

does anyone not like the in camera jpg processing on 40d. it seems like the sharpening used is usm with a radius that's too large. the camera jpgs do not show fine detail nearly as well as raw processed in camera raw, for example for a landscape with a wide that has a lot of fine detail

I shoot in Av most of the time and Tv for sports/action. Full Manual is a joke on most DSLRs - if you know what shutter speed/aperture you want and that you want to expose it at -2/3, let the camera do the work - saves time.

When I got my camera I shot in full manual for the first month or two - the pictures sucked, but I learned a lot about ISO, Shutter Speed and Aperture and how they relate.

I still shoot jpg tho. I've never really run into any problems what I couldn't fix in photoshop with a little bit of effort. I'll probably shoot RAW in the future, but shooting jpg makes me think more because I know I can't mess up as much.

    :dunno:

Looks like I should buy a new card and switch RAW.

Are the Extreme III cards worth it? Can my 350d even use the III?

KenRockwell speaks sense when he says Jpeg Normal is what I shoot majority of the time. I have no time to edit 300 photos from my vacation :mamoru:
