A man who ended up in the emergency room told authorities he was showing his friends how to shoot the new gun he’d purchased when he accidentally shot himself in the leg.

The 25-year-old Fort Walton Beach man told Okaloosa County deputies investigating the accidental shooting that he was “explaining to (his friends) how to shoot” the 357 revolver he’d bought.

“He said he pulled the hammer back on the pistol and, when he went to disarm the weapon, he accidentally discharged it,” a Sheriff’s Office report on the incident said.

The man and two of his friends were seated inside his truck during the incident. He took the gun from the glove compartment to show it to his friends, the report said. When the gun went off, the round entered his lower left leg, exited without striking the bone and lodged in the driver’s side door panel, the report said.

His friends rushed the “profusely” bleeding victim to Fort Walton Beach Medical Center, the report said.

No charges will be filed since it was an accidental shooting.

If you drop a revolver with the hammer down on a loaded chamber will it fire?

The gun lands on the hammer.

If the firing pin is actually on the hammer (like most older revolvers) then it's possible. If it isn't, then no. Most newer revolvers require the trigger to be pulled in order for the firing pin to engage.
