Man shoots and kills home-invasion robber
    December 14th, 2007 @ 6:45am

Nicole Gonzales and Tom Callan reporting

A home invasion turned deadly in West Valley when a man shot and killed one of two men who broke into his home.

The fatal shooting happened around 10:30 last night near 3300 South and 4400 West. Police say it started when a woman knocked on the door. After that, two men stormed into the house.

The invaders taped the homeowner's wife to a chair while they forced the homeowner around the house at gunpoint.

Lt. Lamont Cox of the West Valley Police Department said, "The bad guys were taking him through the house gathering valuables, and he was able to overpower one of them and take their gun."

The homeowner shot and killed one of the robbers, who was wearing a ski mask. The other robber took off. He and the woman are still on the loose.

A baby was sleeping in a back room of the home during the commotion. The infant was not hurt.

Police say the homeowner was the one who called for help.

"It was the owner that called us and said, 'These guys broke into my house and I shot one of them,'" Lt. Cox said.

The homeowner is 31 years old and his wife is in her 20s. He says he didn't know the intruders, but it's still under investigation. Police say the homeowner probably won't face charges.

Officials say the homeowner's wife and baby are doing fine, and victim's advocates are helping the family through the experience.

Holee chit! That's just down the street from me. I'm near 5400 South and 5600 West. Glad he was able to overpower them and retaliate like he did.

Do reporters really sit at work and think "Ok, how can I make this incident demonify guns, but barely touch on the fact that a crime was commited?"

I'm so sick of this type of crap.
