NEWAYGO, Mich. (WOOD) - The Newaygo County Sheriff's Department is investigating an accidental shooting that killed a 28-year-old father of three.

Authorities say Jason Charles Mielke and his dad were cleaning a muzzleloader found near a dumpster at the apartment complex where Jason lived.

The shooting happened around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at his father's home in the 3000 block of South Cottonwood Avenue in Big Prairie Township.

A sheriff's investigation concluded that a breech plug became stuck in the muzzleloader as the two men were cleaning it. As the men used a torch to heat the barrel around the plug to help release it, the weapon fired off a round, hitting Mielke in the abdomen.
    :hsugh:

When authorities arrived, they found him lying outside the home with a gunshot wound. He died at the residence.

Theodore Mielke said his son graduated from Fremont High School and liked to hunt. He also said his son's girlfriend, Brandie Gondor, gave birth to twins last year. Mielke also has a 2-year-old son.

A memorial service for Jason Mielke will be held at 1 p.m. Jan. 17 at the Sherman Township Hall in Newaygo County. His family decided to donate his organs.

His family also set up a fund for his children at Independent Bank. People can go to any branch and donate to the Jason Mielke fund.

I always get concerned when I click on threads about people that died cleaning/fixing weapons...until I read the stories.

Interesting, using a torch to clean a muzzleloader is about as smart as using a blasting cap to pack C4 into a soupcan.

If there was ever a weapon ban/registration that I would find plausible, it would be for muzzleloaders.

Some of the dumbest shit I have ever seen has involved people playing around with them. When I worked at a gunstore, you would simply not believe the amount of dumbfucks who would bring in muzzleloaders that were still loaded and primed, from LAST YEARS deer season, wanting me to clean them and get them ready. We had a sign on the door specifically referencing this, to no avail. Double and triple (most I ever pulled out was five, about 2 months ago) balls/charges stuck, bore obstructions, completely rusted and welded shut breechplugs, KB! from people mixing smokless with BP (both knowing, and unknowing), etc.

I have seen it all, and I absolutely cringe when I see the fucking things.
