    WHO: my momma
    WHAT: powerbook 12-inch 1.33ghz
PROBLEM: when it boots up, nothing but a blue screen shows

    TRIED:

-booting from cd and running disk utlity
....the hard drive comes up in the list with NO partitions

    -booting in target mode
....comes up with the screen and the firewire symbol moving but when i try to access the drive, for either sys prof or disk utlity, freezes

-booting up with the disk manager
....does not find any drives to boot from

    -diskwarrior
....does not come up with any drives

    SOLUTION: unknown

all we really want is the data off the hard drive since she had no backups (no need for the flaming, she is already really upset about it)

ON THE HORIZON: we are going to have my boss who is apple certified take the hard drive out and try it as an external. also, we may send the hard drive to a data recovery facility and have them attempt at it.

this computer has all her work from the past 3 years, including photos and lesson plans from the 2 colleges she works at

ANYONE WHO CAN POINT ME TO SOMETHING THAT WILL GET OUR DATA BACK THAT HAS NOT BEEN MENTIONED YET WILL RECIEVE A CASH AWARD around 100-200 dollars

we already went through that, they can easily replace the hard drive, getting the data back is a whole other ballpark

a apple tech checked it out and said that the data is not possible of retrieving but another apple tech said that if you send it to a data recovery place, the might be able to do it

i always thought data was never gone unless the drive was formatted 8 times??????

am i retarded or is that true?!?!?!??!?!?!?

:eek3: Not sure if that would work though. Try the data recovery company first though.

    have you tried:

putting the HD in another notebook? I would reccomend using an external HD enclosure and hooking it up to your Mac, and access it as a secondary HD. :dunno: I bet it would recognize it then :dunno:

I would sure as hell not put it in the freezer for 1 hr though :ugh:

Supposedly, the freezing contracts the metal components, allowing them to move freely again.

DO NOT let apple touch it until you recover the data! You take it into the apple store they will just nuke it and say it was unrecoverable even if it is. I have a utility disc but it sounds like the MB might have some issues so my suggestion would be what you already said. Pull the HD out and put it in another machine or enclosure. You can get them from all over. The data on the drive IS recoverable im sure! DO you want me to host my mac repair cd? i have a self made repair cd that has 10.3.9 boot and every app known to mankind installed to use. Tech tool pro, disc warrior, several other partition recovery utilities? AIM me if you want me to host this iso for you! Aim = Bluews6
If you were local here in houston id say stop by i can fix anything with macs i bring them back from the dead! I have a house full of old macs i need to get rid of i rescued from the dead :big grin:

Forgot to say even if the HD is toast the platters where the info is stored usually is undamaged unless it was dropped and then the platters get damaged. Its like scratching a cd on the top or something. If that happened then your screwed but most likely everything will be recoverable!
Just remember " DONT PANIC " :headbang:

 whatever dude. Part of this experience is teaching the "50 year old woman" how to make backups of her work. If you don't succeed in that, then nothing positive will have come from this.

honestly, I think that once you hook it up to anohter computer, it will be fine. I would just make sure that you try booting both from it, and if that doesnt work, then set it as slave, adn boot from primary drive.

If you need to take the drive to a professional level data recover service you running a bunch of drive recover utilities make their job harder.

I don't necessarily agree with that, but it's true that you should try to do as little to the disk as possible.
