Man Found With Ammunition Stockpile To Remain Jailed

A South Bend man will remain locked up until his trial on charges that he stockpiled nearly 80,000 rounds of ammunition in his home in the belief the world was on the brink of economic collapse and violence.

A federal magistrate says 38-year-old Kevin Rieder poses a danger to the community and has not complied with previous court orders.

Rieder faces a federal charge of illegal possession of ammunition in violation of an earlier restraining order taken out by an ex-girlfriend. Authorities removed the ammunition during a raid last week that followed a six-month investigation.

Defense attorney Jeffrey Kimmell urged the magistrate to release Rieder so he could be readmitted to Madison Center for psychological care.

I have first hand info on this nut bag he is my neighbor it was only 79,000 rounds of ammo and 55 55 gallon drums of gas and diesel fuel in the yard and a truck and trailer. He bought the house just to stalk the EX. Every other day the cops were there becouse of something. Last time he demanded all the ammo walmart had they put him in the rubber room for 12 days.

Is there a law stating how much ammo a person is allowed to have?

The title is misleading. He wasn't charged with stockpiling ammo, he was charged for being in possession of ammo which violated a restraining order.

Re: the ammo thing, there are laws about storage of explosives, incendiaries, etc. that determine how and where they are stored. I'm all for being prepared and freedom and apple pie but that much ammo poses a safety problem.

how so? its not like bullets go flying thousands of feet if they explode... they just pop and go maybe a foot.

I don't know about you but I do not want to be around 80,000 rounds of burning ammunition.

As long as its not loaded in a weapon, burning ammo isn't much danger unless your standing right next to it, when it cooks off the brass ruptures and the bullet pops off but not with any real velocity.

Yeah, but most FD's wont go in if they know ammo is inside, regardless if its 1k rounds or 100k rounds.

why's that? on mythbusters a few weeks ago they proved that even if you are standing 2 feet from it, it will only cause minor skin cuts, and the casings caused the damage, not the bullets, and it took .50 BMGs to cause the wounds.

Did mythbusters burn 80,000 rounds of small arms ammo?

Jesus, I know the stuff doesn't make nuclear blasts you faggots, but 80,000 small metal containers of gunpowder which is not stored properly is not safe and if you were moving it in a truck you'd have to placard it :fawk:

How does that work for insurance reasons (Since there is no effort being made to put out a blaze)

they dropped a robotic front end loader full of ammo onto a fire, surrounded by soundboard cutouts of people with the soundboard calibrated to the ballistics gel penetration.

What is unsafe about it? Its established that the rounds don't have the power to penetrate their protective gear as long as they aren't chambered.
