BELLINGHAM - A 24-year-old man who was found dead after being fired on by police Friday turned out to be armed with a pellet gun, Bellingham police said.

The incident began at around 5:30 p.m. after reports that David Duncan Clark, 2706 Humboldt St., and three other individuals were acting disorderly and throwing items out the windows of Clark's home, Bellingham Police Lt. Steve Felmley said.

Three of the individuals left without trouble when police arrived, but additional units and a SWAT team were called when Clark brandished what looked like a semiautomatic handgun on the front porch of the home.

During the four-hour standoff that followed, officers went around the back side of the house and ordered Clark to come out of the house. When Clark appeared at the back door brandishing the handgun, officers commanded him to drop the weapon, Felmley said.

At some point, Clark charged at police with the gun. After attempting to disarm the man by shooting at him with immobilizing beanbags, two officers fired their weapons at him. Clark then retreated into the house.

Clark refused to leave the house and officers fired several canisters of tear gas into the home.

When officers broke the door down at around 9:30 p.m., Clark was found dead inside. No other people were found inside the home.

After Clark's gun was taken into evidence, investigators discovered that it was a pellet gun designed to look like an authentic military pistol.

"The design, heft and size of the weapon appeared authentic and deadly, even when it was actually handled by the investigators," Bellingham police said in a prepared statement. "Upon examination the gun turned out to be a pellet gun designed as a replica of a 'Desert Eagle' Israeli military pistol."

Bellingham police also said they have had several previous contacts with Clark over threats he had made to other individuals, including former co-workers, and for displaying another authentic-looking pellet gun at a coffee stand.

In another recent incident, Clark was found to be following a Whatcom County Sheriff's detective at a local grocery store. Clark followed the detective's unmarked patrol car to the store and also followed him, by foot, into the store.

Clark attempted to purchase a handgun but these recent events caused a "hold" to be placed on the transaction.

Two officers have been put on paid administrative leave after firing their weapons during the standoff. It is departmental policy following any officer-involved shooting for the officers to be put on administrative leave, Felmley said.

A cause of death has not yet been determined. Police haven't said whether the man died from rounds that were fired by officers.

"The fact that you’ve got ‘Replica’ written down the side of your gun, and the fact that mine says ‘Desert Eagle point five-0.′, should precipitate your balls into shrinking..."

Sounds like the cops took plenty of excessive risks to give him chances to resolve the stand off peacefully.

Too bad somebody has to bear the burden of killing a person for this idiot's stupidity.
