Varmint is rabbits, squirrel, and coyote.

I already have an AR with an Aimpoint sight but will either buy a new scope or build a 10/22. What do you think? Obviously I wont be shooting the coyote with the 10/22, but could always bring out the 17HMR or 308, but the 308 is heavy and 17hmr ammo costs a lot.

.223 is going to be reloaded. What scope should I go with? I am thinking something like a new 3-9 Nikon Buckmaster, or an used Nikon Monarch from other forums.

If I go the 10/22 route I think I would go with TacSolutions barrel because it is light, a hogue laser stock (link, vidlink), little trigger stuff, and probably a 2-7 scope.

I would not switching over the sights on the AR because I just can bring out the other Carbon15 with Eotech if I really felt like shooting the red dot sight.

So spend less and convert AR, or buy and build a 10/22?

Edit, or just use what I have and screw the whole varmint project? Maybe buy a new handgun? Saiga 12 :eek3:
Edit2: also have a 12g shotgun that works fine for getting rabbits

why would you go with a light barrel on a varmint plinker??

    i vote 22-250 with a heavy wall barrel ...

punched the primer out of a spent shotgun shell yesterday at 100 yds ...

i think 22-250 is a great varmint round for out to 300 yrds.

If it matters, AR is only a midlength 16" RRA which should be sufficient enough. If not I will have to buy a new upper.

I dont have a 10/22 yet but I am searching pawn shops for them.

My only handgun is a P226 9mm, but I want more. .45 is too expensive to buy :(

    ?

How pricey is 22-250 ammo? I was thinking something light would be nice when I carry it around the field.

The perfect round.....and I've done that too, but I missed the primer by a little :o
My only problem was that 100 yds is too close to hear two distinct "booms".

10/22- pick up a Nordic AR22 cuz it's cool, throw on a PRS, Tac-sol threaded barrel and SWR warlock.

AR- shoot what ya got, or pick up a heavier profiled barrel and swap barrels- it's easy. Millett DMS-1.

    I wouldn't want a .22 or an AR for a varmint rifle.

You already have a perfect varmint rifle in the .17 HMR - build something else.

100 yd shot and it was set up less than a foot from soft dirt on the dam of a pond. 12ga #7 isn't doing anything to anyone at 100 yds. Get off your high horse.

Well this has gotten offtopic. I ended up buying a Nikon Buckmaster 3-9 40mm but not sure what I am going to do with it. Probably throw it on the AR for now or if I don't really care for it on the AR just build a 10/22 for it. Not sure yet, and it was only $150.
