Ok... many of you know I've only been powerlifting for about a year but I've been lifting hard for 8-9 years. To accomodate powerlifting my form has completely changed.

When I got to a 405lb raw bench press between freshmen and sophomore year of college here is the routine I followed.

    Monday: Chest/Tri
    Tuesday: Back/Bi
    Wed: Leg/Shoulder
    Thursday: Chest Tri
    Friday: Back/Bi

Surprisingly enough, I was playing college football and not pledging a fraternity.

My chest/tri day consisted of the following:

Flat Bench, always done close grip (explained in my video at the bottom)
    135x20
    185x10-15
    225x10-12
265x as many as I could
315x as many as I could
345x as many as I could
365x as many as I could

after banging away with this routine, it gave me an easy 405 for a single

    Flat DBs
    usually 3-4 sets

    Decline BB
    135
    185
    225
    265
    315

    DB Flyes
    4 sets

    Cable Crossovers
    3 Sets

    Skullcrushers w/ EZ Curl Bar
    25's x 15
    35's x 10
    45's x 8
    45's, 10's x as many as a I could

    Rope Pressdowns
    Failure Sets

Yeah, I felt the burn and was overtrained as fuck. But guess what.... I got strong as fuck and it put size on me.

I have no fucking idea why I made this thread or the following video, but people are really over thinking things these days. get in to the gym and lift. Westside isnt a good routine for some people, a 5x5 isnt a good routine for some people, an Arnold-like routine is good for some people, linear periodization is good for others, blah blah blah.... the list goes on.

For the first 3-4 years of your lifting journey, all you need to worry about is lifting heavy, eating to grow, and getting sleep. stop worrying about the little shit. If you have been lifting for 6 months, you don't need cutting edge supplements, you don't need to worry about what muscle group's size is lagging, just get into the gym and lift. Find a routine you like and isn't killing you, stick with it for a while and enjoy the results.

STOP THINKING SO MUCH ABOUT LITTLE SHIT!

Here is the video that explains how to close grip bench

its hard to tell for newbies in the gym but it becomes more apparent the more experienced you become. as the injuries start to happen, some lifts start to suffer, gym motivation drops, etc

I had no idea (hindsight vision is 50/50) at the time I was overtraining.

you sound completely different than i thought you would

but good point on the overthinking instead of lifting heavy stuff...paralysis of analysis as my friend says

My bench press has been stuck at 225x2 for the last 3 months on the 5x5 routine and am thinking I need to listen to maine's words of experience.

 I've been doing close grip bench for the past month because my tri's are severely lagging, and I can tell a noticable difference in both size and strength, even though I've been inconsistent as hell lately.

when i close grip, i pull my elbows right next to me ALA Skull crushers and lower the bar to my solar plexes, i stop about 4" above my rips so that my shoulders dont roll forward. It eliminates any shoulder stress/work and hits my triceps Perfectly.

Wait, so you flare? I always just keep the arms tucked the entire time, or at least attempt to
