I was a list server admin for about a year, and we used a product called Lyris (www.lyris.com). From what i understood, it was the king of all listmanagers. Not cheap though, but it can run on a variety of databases. Pretty sweet product.

yea, i don't directly pay for my shit either, but whoever i'm doing the research for expects me to find the best product at the best price, and trust that i do. Basically if you don't need the granularity or features of big expensive software, then why pay for it.
