I've got my school mail setup through SMTP and it won't let me send any messages. It says the connection is fine and will receive mail just fine, but sending doesn't work. I've had it set up this way for about 3 months since I've had my computer and it's worked just fine. It's kind of annoying that I can receive mail just fine, but if I want to reply to a message I have to log in tot he website to send.

Any ideas on what could be causing this? And yes I've checked all the obvious preference settings, even deleted the account and reset it up.

Tried that...still doesn't work...mine is operating on port 110 anyway. I just sent multiple e-mails yesterday with no issue whatsoever. I don't understand why this just now decided to stop working

This is the error I get:

Cannot send message using the server UARK

Connections to the server “smtp.uark.edu” on the default ports timed out.

Select a different outgoing mail server from the list below or click Try Later to leave the message in your Outbox until it can be delivered.

Sending from: "My Name" <[email protected]>

Then it lists my mail servers...which is only my UARK. I know UARK mail isn't down because I have to keep logging on to send e-mails from there

Now when I run Connection Doctor it lists 2 UARK servers and the first one connects while the second fails

The first one would be the incoming mail server which is why it passes.

And it still sounds like a port issue to me. You have tried ports 25, 465, and 587?

Port 110 is an incoming email port so I have my doubts you've tried the others.

When I try 25 and 587 I get a sideways-ish lightning bolt looking thing and it tells me my accounts are offline

Never heard to try 465...I'm trying that now

465 doesn't work either...that one actually gives me the hazard triangle with the exclamation point and the error says port 465 timed out and not just an error that says my accounts are offline.

If it matters my roommates older MBP is having the same issues I just found out. Both on our network and his parents network

I finally found on the university IT website some "instructions" to set it up. However it wants me to setup an IMAP account instead of POP. I did the IMAP according to their guidelines (SSL and 2626 port) and after I did it it never said it had any connection problems, however it wouldn't receive or send any mail. For now I just put it back to port 110 on POP so I can at least get my e-mails forwarded.

This is definitely an issue with the school's email server/settings.

if you've got cable internet, it's possible that your ISP isn't allowing you to send mail using another company's outbound server
