Intuition tells me that the spring would wear out if I were to keep my 13-round magazines fully loaded all the time. Right now, I keep seven rounds in each mag.

If you're going to load a mag, why would you NOT fill it :hsugh:

Because the spring would be worn out? Or is that an eventuality anyway? A former Marine friend of mine suggested I not load all 13 rounds for that very reason but I'd like to know if it's true or not

Actually, the springs will wear out from loading and unloading.

So it's an eventuality? How do I know when it's time to replace the magazine?

Yeah. Springs wear from compressing and decompressing again and again. Not from being compressed and held, or fully extended and left alone.

Sorry for another newbie question but what does "FTF" mean? Failure to fire?

Keeping a magazine full loaded will not wear the spring out.

For the most part yes, I have one or two mags that dont feed well when fully loaded so those dont stay fully loaded, but other then that all of my mags are filled to capacity.

yes and no...I've got too many to keep loaded all the time. If I take a few to the range and use them I'll often just throw them in the safe and say hell with it. I always keep one mag fully loaded and in my guns, the rest may or may not be loaded.

If i wake up to the zombie apocalypse, I'll run outside naked in hopes that I will be bitten, so that I can enjoy the people eating action.

When it starts malfunctioning, and even then you won't have to replace the whole magazine, you can just buy new springs/followers/etc.

Keeping a spring fully compressed for long periods of time will not wear out the spring at all, this is probably one of the most commonly asked questions over on ARFCOM and anytime someone asks it, people will post a link to this article written by a mechanical engineer, I don't have the link though.

I've got all my mags numbered and I basically use them all in order.

I always keep one mag for each of my guns loaded at home with good self defense rounds while the rest of my mags only see cheap shit like WOLF, etc.

I keep my AR mags down one, they are easier to lock into the gun that way. all the pistol mags are fully loaded, they take next to no pressure to get locked in.
