Made a thread about this before but I don't have a sub so I can't search. Quick Q'

My laptop has a SPDIF input, so If I were to connect it to a DD 5.1 system, what cable do I need. I have an optical cable and even though it can pass a signal, then optical cable's hole is way too thin so therefore it can't stay put.

Do I need a coaxial cable? So far, the only cables they sell are those with the big enclosing, but that won't fit on my laptop.

S/PDIF can either be optical or coaxial. Look at the hole. If it looks like a coaxial (RCA, composite, component) connection then its coaxial. If it looks like the end of your optical cable its optical.....

BTW, if its coaxial, you want to get a digital coaxial cable

If its passing signal then its probably optical. More description of "optical cable's hole is way too thin" would help...

See the third input from the right? That's the SPD/IF input. I can put an optical cable but it wont stay put, but it can get a signal because I saw the red laser.

That looks more like a coaxial one... Most optical holes have a cover of some sort.

i guess an easier way to look at it is...

the left one is optical, the right is coaxial

or you could look in the manual for the laptop or search for it online..

I already know that. I have a home theater system. You'd think I already went through Optical/TosLink crash course. What I am asking is if they sell some sort of cable that doesn't have the enclosing that coaxial cables do.

If you notice the jack is not outwards but inside towards the unit.

Most of the stuff I see is SPD/IF to RCA and RCA can't transfer a digital signal but digital coax can.

You sure its not a mini-plug optical then?

It's not an SPDIF input anyway, it's an output.

Yeah, that resembles the shape more. Going to look this up.
