Are macbooks really worth the extra money? I'm getting a new laptop for uni next year, and gonna be using it mostly for school, movies, and photography. What's the difference between say, a 2000 macbook pro, and a 1500 pc laptop?

Build quality, OS X Leopard > Vista/XP and ease of use were the three reasons that I switched to Apple.

I think it is worth it, but not everyone will. Useful and powerful programs that come with the OS are much better than 3rd party apps...plus, hardware that works specifically for the OS and with other internals is something i'd pay extra for.

Is there a reason you're posting this in the Arts & Photography forum instead of the Mac Shack?

since lenovo is what the main forum reccommends, lets compare equal spec'd proccessors/ram. MBP will run your OS of choice (though OSX >*) faster, and Adobe products faster. You get a smaller, lighter machine, DVI, FW400 and FW800, great LCD, great warranty with the abaility to aftucally walk your computer in for help. You also get a lot of great apps preinstalled and  trackpad

Comparably spec'd out machines from Apple vs. Lenovo:

Oh, and you can EASILY run any OS you want on the Mac out of the box without hacking. OS X, Ubuntu, WinXP, Vista, etc. all run natively or via virtualization. If you are taking a video class with a Thinkpad and the Prof wants you to run Final Cut, you'll have to spend a weekend figuring out how to run OSX86 on it.

With a Mac it's a plain install if you have a class that requires Windows.

I never said I couldn't figure out how to run it.. the problem is that to do ANYTHING on it, you have to PAY for software

what the FUCK does PAYING for software have in common with open source?

    you ARE retarded.

I'm not a 12 year old girl that uses the computer for nothing more than recording videos to post on youtube.

    I'm talking about useful software.

In fairness though since you used the educational discount on the mac you could easily use the CPP/EPP and get even more off the Lenovo. The macbook pro is an excellent buy though regardless. The numerous boot options really makes the deal that much better.
