I will be buying a macbook pro within a few months, and was wondering which one I should get. I'm not going to be doing anything too graphic intense, but I will be doing a lot of programming.

Is the 256 MB marketed towards graphic professionals who create HD movies on their laptop or something?

Right, the 256MB helps with photos/movies/art and stuff like that. If you are just doing programming, 128MB is plenty.

Assuming you are talking about a Core 2 Duo MBP, you are going to be getting more performance from the faster processor than the extra 128mb of memory on the GPU. I wouldn't buy the higher end model just because I wanted to play games unless money wasn't an issue at all.

simple rule i live by, get the higher model, especially for parts o the laptop you can't upgrade.
go with 256. you'll regret it if you don't later on if you don't

bought both my iMac G5 and macbook and upgraded the hell out of them from the start

bigger hard drives and max amount of memory i stuff into the systems
