Macbook power adapter caught fire, burned through cord near the magsafe.

Read online this is really common. Don't want to spend 50 bucks on a new adapter and it just happens again. Is there any third party power adapter?

Is it under warranty? Even if it isn't, if you have an Apple store near you, try going there and talking with someone about it. No harm in trying to get a new one for free (And yes, I have heard of people who have done this and gotten stuff for free).

go look on the apple store online. 3000 reviews an the power adapter and it has like 1.5 stars.

all the negative reviews are about the cord melting or catching on fire.

Because if it works properly I'm going to write a 5 star review.

I'd bring the remains to an Apple store and get a free replacement.

If it catches fire, bring it in. More than likely they are going to swap it for you

well according to the apple annual report it sold ~6,000,000 portable computers in the year for that report. so, his 3,000 negative reviews constitute 0.05% of the chargers are having a problem. not exactly REALLY COMMON.

you act like im trying to insult you or something.

remember, I own a mac too.

its common enough that it is completely obvious when you look at the reviews.

there are tons of products that have close to 5 stars on apple site. the power adapter is a piece of shit. and it should not cost fucking 80 bucks.

im gonna bring it into apple store today.

I am actually ready to steer away from apple for this reason, among many others.

I have used apples for a long time. This last one has given me nothing but problems.

I have been through 3 batteries, all warranted.
    A new top case
    2 chargers
    A hard drive
    and a logic board

I must say, they are great with customer service. I just can't afford to have this much downtime.

No, there are no 3rd party adaptors available. Apple hasn't licensed the MagSafe connector to anyone. If you really did burn, goto an Apple store and they will replace it.

Didn't get a chance to go to apple store yesterday because of snowstorm in chicago.

Going to go today, if they won't give me a free one I am just going to have to buy one. Cant stand not having a computer.

Will post pics of the burnt charger later tonight possibly or tmrw.

^ no, but you got pretty defensive on "really common"

I went into apple store, talked to a guy. I said I had a problem with my power brick, he took one look at it and said we will replace it. Asked when I got my computer (oct 2006 out of warranty). Had me enter my name and zipcode into computer and gave me the power brick.

Whole thing took about 10 minutes, and the store was packed.

Very please about how they handled it.

No pics, they kept the old power adapter. Your milage may vary when trying to get a free power adaptor, I think I got a really nice worker.

I work on a lot of Macs and have never personally seen this. Having said that, they do get pretty hot so it wouldn't surprise me. People beat the shit out of their adapters.

well, laughing is not getting defensive. and as i pointed out its not really common. hell, its not even a common problem. it may be the only problem a power brick can face; and as such, the only problem people complain about.

and again, i was responding to the guy that called me a fanboy.

    Well, lets see....

my house is not a smoldering pile of ash so no, don't think so. lol

I have used plenty though, used macs with OSX in a digital photography class, outside of class I used a windows PC though and in class I just screwed around because I have no idea how anyone can be productive on a mac, the only reason they appear to be the choice of the digital image creation crowd is because for a very long time the best software to do that was only available on mac.
