i have tried many differnt types of discs and my macbook keeps spitting them out after 30-45 secs of trying to read them. it will spin up and make noise as if it were reading but nothing pops up on the desktop. any idea? its not a superdrive just regular dvdrom/cdrw

Mine was doing the same a couple months ago.
Took it into the apple store, they kept it for a couple days and replaced the optical drive.
