My macbook randomly stopped letting me adjust volume without headphones plugged in. Only thing I changed recently were auto updates. I can adjust volume regularly when headphones (im guessing any audio out) are plugged in, but the laptop doesn't seem to recognize the built in speaker, the volume icon is greyed out, and the buttons just have a greyed out speaker icon with the smaller circle with the line through it.

I searched elsewhere but thought I'd try here in the meantime. wtf is wrong :sadwavey:

Ok i just fixed it by plugging/unplugging my headphones. Had a red LED glowing in the headphone jack, too.

if this happens when you're not using headphones, it could be something up with the logic board.

you'd notice other things not working right, though, like usb ports, etc.

Red LED is digital audio output.

there is a switch in the headphone port to detect when something is plugged in.. it could be getting stuck.
