I figure i'm going to have a lot of them, so why not just put it all in one thread instead of a clusterfuck in the mac forum.

Question #1: How do i open avi files? Quicktime wouldn't do it, so I downloaded wmp 9 for mac, and i get an error like "Cannot play back the file. The file format is invalid". I used to be able to play these same avi files on my pc without any problems, so im thinking it might be a codec problem perhaps?

    vlc, mplayer, /thread.

quicktime will read .avi files encoded in MPEG-1 format, like the kind that digital cameras produce. It gets confused when you feed it a .avi-contained file that was actually encoded with DivX, XviD, etc.

just to clarify, because this tends to be a point of confusion for many people.

.mov, .avi -- these are simply container formats -- they have no bearing on the algorithm that was used to encode the file. A "quicktime movie" is merely a .mov-encapsulated file that was encoded with one of the codecs (sorenson, cinepak, motion JPEG A/B, etc.) that Quicktime supports.

You right click wiht the button on the right. If you are using a 1 button mouse, then just hold the button until the menu pops open. Trash can also works.

Control + click = Right click

To move the icon from the dock all you need to do is drag it out of it. Click and hold the mouse on icon and then up it up. A cloud will appear around it and it will disappear when you let go ouf the mouse.

another question: Does the # of pins on the memory matter? I found a 184 pin memory stick for my powerbook for really cheap, and i need to know if it's compatible.

their prices used to be reasonable but not so much these days... the important thing is that they track RAM types by Mac so you can find what you need quickly, and then go somewhere else to buy :mamoru:

    1.) I use Xfactor

2.) Just drag it off the dock. It'll disappear in a puff of smoke. To add an app to the dock, just drag it into the dock. No right clicking needed.

    3.) F11

And you do realize that you can plug in any normal mouse, right? I personally use a 5-button intellimouse, and have expose mapped to the 4th and 5th buttons.

Oh, and the person asking about Bittorrent clients, just use the official client. Its fast, easy to use, and supports limiting your uploads, unlike the windows version.
