I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say take it to the Apple Store. Short of that... call Apple.

If this is an older model of iBook they had an issue with video and it going out. There is a wire in the hinge in the iBook and it gets pinched. You will need to take it in to Apple Genius bar and have them send it in.

    Sorry

Can ibooks do target disk mode?

have him start it up holding down command + t and then hook it up to another computer with a firewire cable and see if it acts like a hard drive, that way he can atleast grab the file off it

I highly recommend doing firewire target mode before sending it in.

any apple computer with FW can do it because they use mainboards that have the functionality. I've got my fingers crossed that apple retained the feature when moving to x86 hardware, as the developer machines seeded to adc members could not do it, even though (IIRC) they had firewire onboard.
