Oh man....if this is true.

A year ago when I was thinking of getting a mac, all I ever heard was, macs don't need things like virus scan and firewalls because it's so secure. Maybe not as secure as even....WINDOWS!

    Next up....Linux

it's all about popularity and power. Mac used to not give users the power to be destructive -- and since few people used it, malicious users targeted PC since that would give them the largest audience. As mac becomes more powerful, and more popular, the potential to cause damage and the audience for that damage to be witnessed will be increased.

So by that logic, Linux is indeed headed for the same fate no?

Gotta remember that people who cause trouble for no good reason are just attention whores. What will get them the most attention for the least effort? Hacking the most popular OS, of course. But now that Apple is starting to look like the new bad guy on the block, there's more of a reason to punish them for being successful and get attention doing it.

If Microsoft were really smart, they'd abandon Vista, keep XP and all of its patches, and add features to it instead of starting over from scratch in the security game.

negative. Vista is fine, they just need to get rid of UAC.

But this doesn't even address the issue that makes this so funny in the first place, Apple fans proclamation that it's a secure OS.

90% of security is making sure nobody knows the goods exist, so as long as nobody was looking for holes, it was a secure OS. Kinda like how an unlocked farmhouse in the middle of nowhere is secure, until the boogie man shows up.

I guess it's funny, but I really could care less if Mac OS or Linux are more secure than Windows. The current paradigm of having a halfway-idiotproofed OS with a firewall to check incoming traffic and a virus scanner to check downloaded files is fine with me. The OS has no business running extra shit nonstop to protect me from intrusions that only happen on rare occasion. I've only been zombied once, and that was when MS Blaster finally taught everyone that they need a virus scanner and a firewall; I had just reformatted back to XP sp0, and I was plugged into my school network to download patches. Bam. That was the first and last time my computer got powned, and the only behavior I changed is to borrow a friend's computer to download the latest antivirus patches onto a CD before I plug into the interweb.

This is something that has been in and out of the news for sometime now.

Similar to the firefox has more bugs than internet explorer issue.

But firefox bugs were less threatening to the end user, and I would suspect it's similar with mac vs pc.

I get your point but I see it differently....who wants to break into a farm house?? Not much there of value....but a PC?? Well...there's all that pron.
To me it's funny simply because of all the Apple hype....they make them sound bulletproof but I've always suspected they weren't. I mean what program is ever bulletproof aside from the trivial ones.

You should click on that link and look at the severity rating in the table. The majority are all like either very severe or critical.

I would feel safer Googling for porn on anything but IE and on anything but a Windows box. That is what it's all about.

That is how these guys should rate security of browsers and operating systems.
