I haven't actively used a Macintosh since the power processors were first introduced!

Has anyone had any trouble using x11 to run Windows software? I only have a few programs that I can't live without and are not available on the OS X platform (mostly vehicle diagnostics tools). Would I need a Windows emulator like VirtualPC to run these or would x11 fit the bill?

you'll need VirtualPC and it works great
Just don't expect to do anything that requires a really really fast PC or 3D graphics (like Maya or other 3D graphic program)

My dad uses it to network to his office. He had Win98 installed on it, but changed it to Win2k. I'm not sure if WinXP is supported but I'm sure the makers of VirtualPC can give you that info.

Yep, you'll need VirtualPC. I used to use it on my mom's old G3 iMac 266MHz, and while it wasn't fast it was usable, so on a G4 it should fly. You can't use X11 to run Windows apps, as X11 isn't Windows! You can use X11 to run Linux apps though, you'll probably just need to compile them on the Mac or download a PPC binary.
