Has BMW lost its sport sedan lead with the latest M5? It isn't the fastest car in its class, the E63 AMG is quicker, and even a 2004 GTO can match it with an LS1 5.7. Maybe they should have bypassed the V10 and gone straight to using the 7 series V12?

one thing I will say is fastest doesn't make it best... And the e60 looks great compared to the shitty e12.

    are you kidding me?

i bet you don't like the 2002 or the 3.0csl too.

the m5 has always been a great "overall" sedan. although beautiful, i don't like the way mercedes is going (which seems to be a focus on more straight line performance rather than overall performance).

The M5 is certainly one of the fastest cars out there - take it to a racetrack to see it shine

A stock GTO won't catch an M5 either, you'd need a Z06 if you wanted to beat it with a GM product

That said, I wouldn't buy one. I'd rather have an E63 because it is more luxury oriented, and doesn't have iDrive.

I would buy a Porsche 997 C4S if I wanted a car to rip up the twisties in

well you shouldnt be throwing the GTO into the same class as the M5. i would say the super saloon market is becoming a bit saturated; however if bmw has in fact lost (which i dont think it has but you could make the case) it is not because of loser the horsepower or quarter mile battle it is because the latest m5 moves away from what makes the M marque great. simplicity and driving experience; the automotive press have bitched and bitched about the numerous settings, modes, and gizmos. and every now that a 6 speed is available the idea still hasnt been fully embraced by BMW.

M5 is still the car to have in it's class if you're going to find the perfect balance between track performance and luxurious every day driving.

They may not compare to an M5, but they certainly aren't POS's

I have 24k on mine and not a single problem

i'm assuming you're talkin about the car and driver comparo....

the main reason bmw lost out to the m5 is the electronics (including idrive) and its lack of torque (compared to the s6 and e63)

BUT as stated above bmw has always made the M5 a great ALL around sedan

    straight line performance
    handling
    luxury

    etc etc

and while the e63 and the s6 may do any combo of those 3 things better than the m5 i believe that the m5 has a combination of all 3 of those things....lets face it there's a trade off with everything....

i'd still choose the new m5 over an e63 or s6

but thats just cuz i'm a die hard bmw fan and always will be!

After working for Mercedes AND BMW, I'd take the M5.

Yeah, I think they dropped the ball using such a small displacement V10 (I couldn't believe they didn't use a bigger block to squeeze more torque out of), but they have MB beat in the styling factor, and fun factor simply due to having transmission options.

Don't get me wrong, 507bhp and 460ft-pds is sick, but a 5-speed (not sure if MB is using 7-speeds in AMG tuned engines yet) tuned by AMG isn't nearly as fun.

I am thinking that the choice of a V10 might have happened because BMW wanted to cash in on their association with F1, in the planning stages BMW were riding relatively high with their association with Williams. Maybe to a lesser extent the positive aura created by the V10 Viper? Still, a V10 was an odd choice.

Anyone who thinks torque alone makes a car is on crack. The bottom line is put the M5 and it's competition on the ring and see who comes out first.

No one said that, champ. :hsugh:

It foolish to use a smaller block when simply using a larger one would've net more torque.

I don't understand it when people don't appreciate older BMW's. These are the cars that made them what they are today, not these new cars. Everything since the E30 has been more weigh compensated with more power. :ugh:

On BBC's Top Gear both the Stig test driver and Clarkson managed to break the differential of the M5, doing the sort of testing they do on any car. Granted, not every car they come across has 500 hp, but still, this is a new car and it would seem normal to expect it to handle a few fast starts without lunching the clutch or differential so early on.

i dont see how you could reasonably compare a new m5 and a gto... they seem to almost be in two completly different realms of the auto industry. the m5 is a "elegant" yet powerful machine. the gto is a raw horsepower burnout ready and it sure looks good in front of your trailer home...

in my opinion the m5 is a great car so what if there are cars with more torque this has got style and power :)

and the e63 is to luxo for my tastes and i dont even think i'd be able to leave an amg alone. i would want renntech or brabus to take a crack at the car. and the audi... i just think big audis look weird i dunno its just me i like there s4 and rs4 tho

The SMGIII trans in the E60 M5 is horrible. Many many have been traded in with low miles.

The 6-speed should have resolved the problem, but traction control cannot be disabled.

RS4 seems a better alternative to the M5.
